True, theatrical methods of acting dominated films even into the 70's due to audiences still wanted their viewing to be larger than life. It wouldn't be till say Scorsese started putting dialog that was more realistic Like in Taxi Driver or John Schlesinger's Midnight Cowboy. Of which I watched for the first time last week.
The rush to turn screen plays/novels into dialog movies and not violating censorship guidlines, was a norm for the industry until a few directors were willing to push the boundaries with the freedom of speech platform.
Hence giving way to what is acceptable today ....Just a thought

Jude, that's a valid theory. But i don't think it explains all of the bad dialogue. If you go back to stuff like Maltese Falcon, I think a big part of it is that film was relatively new. If you watch those movies, the actors resemble stage actors more than what we think of as movie actors now. I think they just hadn't figured out how to adapt yet.

@ jude I don't know Blazing Saddles was a great movie
LOL, yes it was. And the PC police will not let anyone see it again on broadcast TV.
Mel Brooks was a genius. He made us laugh while raising our social consciousness.
I especially like Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety.

One would think censorship had a great deal to do with the dialog of the movies even the acting. Example As how the camera pans away when a couple engages in an embrace which eventually led to a kiss then curtains blowing on a window.

The good ones focused on the plot. The bad ones (which there are a lot of) didn't. So they are like the bad movies now without CGI and good sound beds to distract from the bad writing.
One thing that is interesting though, and the further back you go, it gets worse. In old movies, a lot of the conversational dialogue is awful. And that includes movies that are considered classics. I remember watching The Maltese Falcon the first time and thinking how awful and unrealistic the dialogue was.

I love a lot of 70s and 80s movies. Back then they focused on the plot more instead of the graphics. But I would agree that Westworld was NOT one of those movies!

The fact that you think CGI and technology must mean only big sci-fi and action films shows your lack of knowledge.

There are plenty of great movies from the 70's. But just like any other decade, including now, there is probably tons of crap that Hollywood just put out because they know people will pay to watch whatever.
Which I why I rarely watch a movie or tv show unless it's been recommended by several people.
As far as technology/CGI ... let me guess, you think the Transformer movies are awesome?

It's not just the tech is out of bad acting and writing.
I'm not saying everything from the 70's was bad. But for a large part, dialogue and story lines were lacking. Maybe part of it is a tach problem. Now they can take a bad movie and up the CGI and special effects to help cover up some of the bad. Also, Hollywood has clearly come to better understand the use of the soundtrack and music beds to set the mood and keep people drawn in.
