Just contact the planning office and ask them. That's all you have to do to find out if it's allowed.

JustKnow (view profile) | Posted 9:25 am, 09/17/2021 | So if I had 20 acres out of town limits (because lets be real, I can understand not having RV in a subdivision) and I put an RV or tiny home out there....the county wouldn't allow it?
|
Yes they would. They let an who isn't a local buy a SMALL piece of land in our neighborhood and has rented it to a camper. They got around the legalities now nothing can be done. Our property values went to **** too, so I hope no one on here thinks this is a good idea

I still haven't found any conclusive info that wilkes has ever passed full county wide zoning. The OP has never provided a source confirming it

I've still not found anything saying Wilkes has county wide zoning or found a zoning map. I also notice you haven't provided either.

Zoning ordinances tell you what you can do on your property. They don't spell out what you can't do. Just contact the planning department and ask them if you can live in an RV full time on private property that is zoned for residential use. They will tell you no and it is only allowed in RV parks.

I saw nothing in the ordnance that prevents you from living in a RV on your own property. It did set regs. for RV parks but that is a different subject.
As far as septic and power there are ways around that and the county inspector will have no say in the matter

At one time several counties in Nc tried rural zoning. I thought everyone of them that tried it repealed it.

I dont know. That's why I'm a little baffled by what this topic is about. Trying to figure out what the gripe is here.

Since when does Wilkes County have county wide zoning?

Sounds like what is being described, won't really allow for you to live off grid because if some county or town rule.

Just get off the grid. Reminds me of an old 70's John Prine song

That doesn't make much sense to me. So like if I had land here and wanted to put an RV or tiny home on it, with no need for well or septic, there is some ordinance that doesn't allow that? Even for hunting land?

This is serious and has to do with zoning ordinances. Land that is zoned residential allows for homes that have to be a certain size and sometimes mobile homes are allowed. If it doesn't spell out that you can live in an RV there then you can't do it and they won't give a certificate of occupancy so the power company can connect your power. You could use solar power and a composting toilet (septic permit won't fly either) but if somebody complained you'd have to leave. They'd say the only place you can live in an RV is a RV park per the ordinances.

Yeah, I'm of the notion that if you are on your land, you could live in basically whatever you want to (as long as well and septic issues are followed, if they are needed). Not sure what the "permit" for a tiny home or RV really means? Is this serious?

If you do live in a camper put it under a carport. It's not if it's going to leak it's when.

I found that NC has a minimum size of 70 square feet, and if it's on wheels then the maximum time you can live in it is 180 days.
