I had one of those Motorola phones. It was about the size of a lunch box. It was almost useless because there was almost no service.

In the late 80's I had a remote phone, however I wouldn't call it a cell phone.. I couldn't use it half the time because you couldn't find a tower. I travel all over the country and if cell phones were available, I would have had one. We had pagers and phone booths.

TFR, cell phones existed back in the 60s, airbags were on european cars in 50s, dvds did exist as gold discs size of LP records in 70s known as laser discs, 50+ inch TVs did exist in 70s although known as home projection units.
Mny things that are wide spread today have existed for many decades either cost, size, unpopularity, or other factors prohibited widespread use.

In 1990 there were no cell phones, no TV over 50 inches, no DVD's, and no internet for 99% of the people.

I was just thinking. My grand mother went from horses to a man walking on the moon. That all happened in just one generation.
