The Small Business Center of Surry Community College will offer a free seminar �Doing Business with the Government: Small Business Certifications� on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 from 2:00 until 4:00 pm at the Elkin Center. The Center is located at 1461 North Bridge Street in Elkin.

A Business Opportunity Specialist with the Small Business Administration will lead this seminar and discuss the opportunities available for business owners through SBA certifications. The US Government is the world�s largest buyer of goods and services, with purchases totaling more than $500 billion per year. Federal agencies are required to establish contracting goals, with at least 23 percent of all government contract dollars targeted to small firms.

The SBA works to create an environment for maximum participation by small businesses as federal prime contractors and subcontractors. There are several certifications that can provide businesses that qualify with opportunities within the procurement process. The certifications programs are: Small Business (SB), Small Disadvantage Business (SDB), Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB), Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), 8(a) Business Development and HUBZone.
