The self-righteous hated Jesus and wanted everyone to be bound with the same chains of unbelief they were bound with. Jesus said in one place that they will load you down with heavy burdens and will not raise one finger to help you. Matthew 23:4 We still have the same type folks here today, they say Jesus is the way, and then deny his power to set you free, they say that you must keep your burden of sin and try to figure out a way that you can deal with it.

You do not have to struggle along life's pathway all alone loaded down with a heavy burden that you can not carry.

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
