skeptic you think that the US has better healthcare than all other countries don't you? Guess what, it's not. The US has good medical treatments and technology, but it's not better than many other countries. Believe it or not, some folks like to help people who are sick, not just get rich off other's sickness.

Is it still good when they tell citizens they won't be covered?

I'm not saying their healthcare sucks. They seem quite happy with it. But people seem to think it's free and far superior than ours. That is not true. They spend around 85% of the dollars they take in for healthcare solely on patient care. That's why you have to travel for certain procedures or scans. There has to be research done. Equipment has to bought. A lot of countries get by with these types of healthcare because the US does a lot of the legwork. You can have cheaper healthcare in places when America gives out foreign aid like crack.

skeptic, this is a good site for learning about Canadian healthcare. It looks quite good in my opinion compared to what folks in the US get for what they pay for.

More info on the supplemental plans
SHANOOR SEERVAI: It sounds like public insurance is fairly comprehensive. But two-thirds of Canadians have supplementary or private insurance. Why is that?
CHRISTOPHER HAYES: On average, Canadians pay 30 percent of their total health costs where the provincial plans cover 70 percent. So in that bucket would be medications, if you weren't in a program - durable medical equipment, other health disciplines like psychotherapy, physiotherapy, social work outside of the hospital, skilled nursing, or nursing care in your home. It's not that none of that is covered, but a lot of that is not covered. And so most employed people will have either a group coverage through a private insurer, or individuals can sign up individually for themselves and/or their families to one of these private insurers, but have a private plan.

There are 366 MRI machines in Canada. There are 11,900 in the US. The US has 39 scanners per million population. Canada has 9. Private investment versus government rationing.

"A handful of MRI machines in Canada"? What, like 5? You're constantly misleading with your manipulated claims. Another contradiction: You say that the waiting list is long, because there's not enough machines, yet you can get an MRI from a private company quickly. Where did they get their machines? Clearly there are enough machines, but the private companies want more money than the gov't allows.

Yes. Because that's all the government allows. If they want to skip the line for anything else then they pay out of pocket, if it's allowed by the government to do so in their situation. There is a reason there are only a handful of MRI machines in Canada. It all comes down to private investment. You can fuss and gripe all you want but the world would not have as many medical advances if not for money being invested in private medicine. You can thank capitalists for advances in almost anything in life, including medicine.

Canadians buy supplemental plans for dental, vision, and prescription drugs. Prescription drugs are on average 10% the cost of the same drugs in the US.

The question is, do they need an MRI scan?

The wait time in Canada can be as long as 4 hours, depending what is wrong with you.

I never said you wait for emergencies. I said if you need an MRI you can wait for months. If your in pain or have something serious wrong you can pay out of pocket at a private medical center.

Close to 70% of Canadian buy supplemental plans. Plus they pay for procedures and scans out of pocket if they can't wait for months or years for treatment.
