You have no idea what you are talking about but let me try and educate you some. You have 3 basic types of ARs the first is your standard rifle with a butt stock and a barrel of at least 16 inches and an over all of 26 inches.
The second is a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) with a butt stock and a barrel of less than 16 inches and requires a tax stamp from the ATF to own. In order to get this tax stamp you must fill out an ATF form 1, provide a picture of yourself, along with fingerprints, Notify the CLEO in your county and pay a $200.00 dollar tax. After all this you will wait several months to a year for your tax stamp. Once you have your tax stamp you can build the SBR yourself or buy it from a class 3 dealer.
The third is a AR15 pistol which has a short barrel but has NO butt stock however it may or may not have a brace that attaches to the shooters wrist. A pistol permit is required to buy a complete pistol or buy a pistol lower to build your own.
All of the above are semi auto can be had in several different rifle calibers and pistol calibers as well

Well Johnboy, you're lying again, because most "mass shooters" prefer handguns. It's the highly publicized ones that make the news that usually use an AR. They do so because they are in the Columbine cult. Several psychologists have written about this problem. These socially awkward disturbed individuals find ways to congregate together on social media and trade videos, info, etc. Very much like pedophiles or neo nazis do. And they fantasize about emulating the Trench Coat Mafia.
Personally, I remember this fight being fought in the late 90's over handguns. The left had the same argument then. "They are only made for killing" "no one needs a handgun" "you don't hunt with a handgun" blah blah blah. Sarah Brady is completely responsible for Newt Gingrich ever being elected. So because this fight has happened before, I refuse to give in to any ban of any weapon.

So to expand the question about weapon choice, how does a shooter select the weapon? Easy to conceal, high magazine capacity, accuracy, or maybe just more familiar? Many of the worst incidents had AR-15's used. In total, handguns were used more often.

Even taking the AR Pistol platforms into consideration, the far more common 9mm, .45 caliber,, and even .22 caliber "common" pistols are the far more popular choices for those intent on murder and mayhem.

So much so that when purchasing you have to have a pistol permit (or CC) to purchase the short barrel AR, which is different set of steps than the AR rifle.
It's semantics. But most will see a short barrel AR and call it a rifle, even though technically it is in the pistol (handgun) category when purchasing.
