Seems like I remember reading somewhere his first wife was Annette Pearson in Wilkes and that she later committed suicide.

well, I dont understand why they dont get these two and interrogate them. People are convicted on circumstantial evidence everyday. I am sure if the rope is still intact they way they found it all those years ago, then DNA could be extracted from it. Why should these two be let loose another day to go on with thier lives like nothing ever happened. The picture of those three stuffed in the tub is pitiful.

yes ginny and troy was at the viewing but he was making sure no one could talk to her and he had her doped up. they was sitting on a bench over to the side. it was a shame to be honest .

A question for Tim Bullard.

When they arrested the 4 men from out of town back in 1972, do you think that was a completely wrong path that investigators followed for awhile?

Or was it also a legitimate connection that had to be dropped for lack of evidence?

Interesting that someone said the first wife's family questioned her suicide. Usually, a coronor's report can pretty much validate that type of death, but maybe not in the 70's. Wonder if any of her family tried

to pursue this?

i am going to tell you something else about virginia. at the veiwing you could see that she had the worse bruses on her neck and face. also her all her fingers were broke on one hand. could have been a door was slamed on them. virginia was blonde and fair skined . bryce had the least noticable bruses but he had one on his forhead. you could see rope burns on bobby's neck but he was a lil more dark skined like bryce . virginia realy was hurt the most and more brutle the way she looked. there may have been more on bobby and bryce than you could see but the funeral home may have been able to cover them up better on bobby and bryce but virginia could not be hidden . hers was so visable that you would know she had been a fighter and they were brutle to her. every time i think of what they looked like it would make anyone so upset and mad they way this happened.

heres something else i understand that happened. the next day troy went to the dealership and got a brand new jeep i think it was and the sbi made him take it back. this is not the first time he had got a new auto and left in it. he actually took one and he and ginny went out west in it without permission and bryce and virginia had to go out and bring it back. there is probably alot the public doesn't know about that went on between troy and the durham family. i wish he could be questioned and drilled but if he had anything to do with it and his first wife and got away with it then he knows the law and what not to say . ofcourse he will not agree to being questioned you can bet on that. all the durham family thinks he had alot to do with it. that doesn't mean its true but if all the truth was known about troy and bryce and virginia alot of people would think the same.

I'm curious (if you remember) was Troy and Ginny at the viewing?

Thanks for linking the photos, Tim. Unreal. Absolutely unreal that they were crammed into a tub like sides of beef. Was the exterior pic shot the same day? Just wondering because both garage doors are closed. Interesting ghost story too.
Just a thought to throw out for you all to ponder. One of the papers said they had rope burns on their hands.
Wonder if the killer(s) also got rope burns on their hands and in the process, shed enough skin to leave some DNA? Didn't the sheriff say the rope was still preserved? Oh, and one more thing I caught from rereading Tim's article. The sheriff said all vehicles in and out the road were accounted for during the critical time on the night of the murders, and then commented on the theft of the Jimmy. Woluld that not indicate that the killers had been waiting for awhile at the Durham residence. And wouldn't someone have had to of dropped them off, if no car was found at the site, or seen leaving the site after the murders? They had to have planned to use the Durham vehicle for a getaway car. So who picked them up after they ditched it?

You make a very interesting point. IF the rope has been preserved and not tainted there very well could be DNA on it (unless the perp wore gloves). Interestingly, there is a new approach being developed called "touch DNA". They have been able to find DNA by checking places or clothes that would have been touched during the crime.

Killer always returns to the site of the murder. That's like an arsonist will set fire of something and then come back and watch it burn or help put out the fire.

Well, if ol' Troy is ever arrested and tried for this, he won't want me on the jury. I am convinced of his involvement. One more question to throw out, and I promise to shut up. Since l believe Troy was involved, why the call and the drive out to the house in the bad weather with Ginny that night. why not just go home, go to bed, and let someone else find them when they didn't show up for work the next morning?

oh, george flowers took them. he had a studio in boone and did a lot of photos that ended up in the paper where i worked, the watauga democrat. he did a lot of UPI work back then too. really nice guy. i realize that they are jolting but it looks like antiseptic really is the best daylight for a cold case. i appreciate you all talking about it and spreading the word. there are a lot of things you say that i didn't know. the sbi agent is in bad health i understand. i'm trying to interview people before they die off. the only way to get a case solved is to let law enforcement know you are concerned. the head investigator up there would be glad to talk to folks in wilkes. she is very good.

Bryce Durham grew up in Wilkes County, and he moved to Boone with his daughter, son and wife from Surry County.
A year later he, his wife and son were found murdered Feb. 3, 1972, heads submerged in the tub, and to this day no one has been imprisoned and convicted for the heinous crime.
Watauga County Sheriff L.D. Hagaman has reopened the case which has never been shut, and he has several retired law enforcement officers looking into it, hashing and rehashing facts. There is one person of interest Hagaman wants an interview from, and that person is the son-in-law who found the bodies.
The woman who lives in the house now thinks it is haunted.
Karen Coffey Wood one Thursday morning, Ive lived here since 1997.
She was born in Boone. Her father, Harold, has operated the Hilltop Drive-In outside of town for 37 years.
Wood said her father says he saw the cop cars go by that night as he was cleaning in the restaurant. He had the front door open, and it was quiet outside. He was mopping and cleaning. The Durham family would come in the restaurant and eat. He said they were really nice people. They were murdered that night, a mom, dad and son, a student at Appalachian State. Durham operated Modern Buick in Boone.
He remembered Mr. Durham, the son and the wife, she said. Students a few years ago were doing a paper on the murder. They wanted to come in the house step by step and take pictures where the bodies were. We let them come in. They were trying to solve the mystery, but I dont think they ever solved it.
I know there are creaks in an old house. I know when I am sitting in the den, my bedroom, the
master bedroom, is right above the den upstairs. So when I am sitting in the den, I can hear footsteps in my room. Her boy was asleep when this happened.
Then sometimes I sleep upstairs by myself. At night I can feel something in the room, like a presence. Then I will wake up in the middle of the night, and my TV is on, and Ill turn it off. Ill go back to sleep, and it will come back on, so Ill just unplug it.
Then sometimes Ill be in my room, and the channels will keep flipping, and it will stop on the news or something. Ill say, Okay, thats fine, Mr. Durham. Well watch the news. The channels will start flipping again. My son, his room is finished in the basement. He said his stereo will come on sometimes wide open, and it will go back down. My daughter keeps telling me there is a man in her room.
Her room is right across from the bathroom where the bodies were found. She said, Theres a man standing behind my door. I say, Oh, its probably a ghost. It wont hurt you. Then she will smile. She was home one day, and she called me and said, Mom! Theres a lady on the couch in the living room. I said, What is she doing? She said, Shes looking at the clock and the fireplace. I say, Well dont be scared, its probably a ghost. The lady vanished.
The address is 187 Clyde Townsend Road, and 187 is the police code for homicide.
