who killed the durham family? here's my story

Mr. Ed

Posted 8:42 pm, 08/24/2010

Bryce graduated from ASU and taught school at Mt. Pleasant Elementary, where he met Virginia, who was also a teacher. Later, he managed Mt. Airy Auto Loans Inc. He only bought the dealership in Boone two years before the murders, so at 49, he could have accumulated quite a bit of money from his previous employment. The young woman who died mysteriously while visiting Troy was Debbie Foster, Wilkes Central Class of 76. She was had been visiting him in Florida, and was found dead on the highway, apparently killed in a hit and run incident. A friend of hers reports that she believes this occurred in '78. Ironic, isn't it, that Troy works on an ETHICS committee? His fellow committee members might be interested in some of his alleged extra-curricular activities....

the womans story claiming the threat by her husban doesn't fit with the crime scen,it appears all three went home together,so a killer wouldn't be surprised by 2 others, guess it's why there wasn't any charges from the grand jury.

I would still like to know where durham got the money for the dealership, and who was the "partner" that backed out on the deal ?

Are Troy and Ray brothers???

They ran a ?store/beer joint on 268 east about where the carwash is now, but I do not know any names. I think Troy and Ray were raised there. I have also heard Benny Staley ran a beer joint at the intersection of 268 and 18 many years ago. That was about a quarter of a mile from the Halls.

The Jeff McDonald case was another example of horrible murders. He was a "Green Beret" and also an emergency room doctor. Prozac was the drug he was hooked on, if I remember correctly.

Does anyone happen to know who Troy Hall's parents are or were?

This reminds me of the Jeffrey MacDonald case at Fort Bragg back in 1970. Similar because: a heinous crime was committed against an innocent family, crime scene was compromised, evidence was lost, other people were blamed/confessed, and he was acting like a guilty man, refusing to cooperate with authorities. Only difference was MacDonald finally did get convicted 9 years later, thanks to the persistence of his father-in-law.

so someone tell me this, where did Bryce durham get the money to buy or open a franchise dealership? that's not something that has ever been "cheap" even in the '70's ?

Rich family ? or what anyone have an answer ?

In the story linked to this thread, the SBI agent contemplates the whole dead battery scenario if you go back and read. But that's just one of many questions anyway.

If son-in-law was behind this, still a good chance are that somebody else actually did the deed. Like maybe the guys that were indicted but later released.

And as someone has already questioned, what was the point of faking the phone call and driving over there anyway? Maybe the daughter herself was not involved, and this was the son-in-law's way to act it out innocently to her....??

Farmer's daughter, good question about the car, but if it was a dead battery, well a battery can go bad at any time and without notice. Doesn't have to be a 'hoopty' to have a bum battery. I have learned this the hard way. I wonder about the 5 hours at the library. It's not like he lived in a noisy dorm and needed a quiet place to study. And if he was doing research, dang, you could research the rise and fall of the Roman Empire in way less than 5 hours. Pretty shabby alibi, in my opinion.

The more we find out about this awful crime, the less I believe that Virginia made the phone call.

Did Troy use their car to drive home from the library earlier? If so, it seems strange that it was running fine then and then wouldn't crank shortly after.

About the money left in the house...It makes sence to me that they wold leave it there. they would eventually get the money anyway. Why risk the police finding it on them during the investigation.

I don't know about anybody else, but I find it strange that this girls parents own a dealership, she and her husband, are living in a trailer park, with a car that is prone to not start, , and I bet she was into something her parents were not very proud of, to not make sure this child had a reliable ride to school? was it because of her husband, did they have a big wedding? Was both parents there? does anybody know this? I just wonder if she could have been jealous of her little brother, maybe he was the one they were proud of? Gosh it is late, I have watched to many life time movies!!! If I were a detective, I would have absolutely went after them two, and not let up, another thing that hit me wrong was why did they not call the police and have them to meet them there, if she thought her family was in danger? and I do believe if I got a call from my mom, with that and then couldn't reach her, I would be the first one in that house!! you better believe that! I just find that strange she sit in the car. I am going to bed now, I have play detective enough!

Annette Pearson was Troy Hall's first wife. She was class of 1965 at Wilkes Central, I think. Her death was ruled "suicide." There were rumors her family had questioned this. I don't know if they ever pursued the concerns or not.

Usually a coronor's report can define this type of death, but I don't know about that long ago. For some reason, I don't remember the exact year this happened, but it was a very long time ago.
