You might be right about 4% I don't know but if you had a clue as to how many companies rely on and would have to lay off employees if Tyson were gone your 4% is grossly off base. And no the growers are not considered employees.
@antithesis You keep saying this over and over, but it's just silly. Tyson employs less than 4% of the county, and a lot of these employees are imported from other areas (like Burma):
It's more than the employees, isn't it? what of the economics of 200 plus growers and the money they generate.
And let's count up a minute around 2500 employees times $400/week or more after taxes if they work the six days. $1 million/week?
WILKES NEEDS TYSON BADLY NO TYSON NO WILKES IF TYSON SHUT DOWN ID GIVE WILKES COUNTY LESS THAN A MONTH TO DRY UP BLOW AWAY

That's a lot, but not critical by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, they were close to bankruptcy in 2009, and the county hardly noticed.
It's just a matter of time before they move to Central or South America, anyway, where they can get cheaper labor, cheaper real estate, and cheaper taxes. Every time someone here complains about being overworked and underpaid, they take one more step south.
I got behind a truck load of chickens this morning as I ate my cajun fillet biscuit. As I gazed upon those fithy terrified birds I couldn't help but wonder if they'd taste better with some Duke's mayonnaise.
The means of production must be nationalized and the needs of the workers placed first. The Tysons and Perdues of this world have lorded over the worker far too long. Only with the elimination of the oppressive capitalist system will the workers achieve happiness.
I once was worth over one million dollars at age 40 and went broke due to the economy killing my business. I closed the doors on my business, there were no jobs to be has. I went to work at a local company for minimum wage for the first 90 days. At least it was a job and I had insurance. I climbed up of the floor, held my head high and left that company two years later in upper middle management. You are not given anything, you have to earth it
I am still digging, working every day, never to get back to where I was but enjoy what I do and plan to work until I did
