Nothing new here. I started working in textile plants at age 15, alongside parents of classmates who had been there for many years, some their first and only job. Those menial task jobs allowed for a small house, car, food, and a little extra. Occasionally there would be a layoff, and many were quite happy to get unemployment (rocking chair money) and wait to be called back or eventually find another so-so job. Fairly stable post WW2 until the early seventies. My dad was too proud for factory work, like some of my extended family. Catchphrase, "he works for hisself" generally meant less stuff and somebody just "piddled".

What shadow said was correct. I just started to post what he said. I remember reading about it during all of that Whitewater scandle they were in. There's been several threads on here about southern democrats and repression of people. Why do you think they're for illegal immigration. Cheap labor that they can treat any ol way. I can't believe people are PO'd about working 6 days. If you don't want to they'll hire somebody that will.

Wilkes doesn't need Tyson. Wilkes is a retirement/ tourist community. Do you see any factories at myrtle beach?

To the OP, that is the way it has been for the last 150 years at just about any factory type job. Nothing new.

I worked many 6 days a week jobs and some 24/7 on call work,but I new what I was getting into.if I didn't like

the job I moved on.. I didn't cry about the work to others.some of the companys went out of business because

they were that bad to work for,but Tyson is still here.

There is no such thing as job security.

If smokey and his coworkers push the issue he will start another thread about how some Asian immigrates were brought in to replace them. Wouldn't be the first time.

I do not nor have ever worked for Tyson but I hear about what they are doing from people in the know not workers on the line. Wilkes plant is the only one with the older slow lines but they are going to be replaced with modern "FAST" lines this year so they can run the same output in five days. You should get Saturday off but you will be working even faster. If you do not go to school or learn a trade what do you expect? There is nothing wrong with this kind of work and it is respectable work so don't take what I say the wrong way. If you do not apply yourself to earning a job that requires special skills and\or problem solving skills you will be forced to do mind numbing back breaking retentive labor. I get sick of listening to people complain about their job when they will not attempt to better their self so they can move up to a better one. When I started at my job I was at the bottom doing one of these jobs. I knew this was not what I wanted. I wanted to be a key member that the company depends on. It took hard work returning to school and going beyond what was required of me but I was able to keep moving up. It is not easy. I have to take on projects that are beyond my skillset but when I figure them out my skills grow. I put myself in a position were my job is secure and that is what you should do. Instead of bucking management to change strive to join them and let someone else do the dirty work under your watch.

Nurse, it doesn't sound like your dad is doing a physically demanding and/or highly repetitious job. Is that a fair assumption?

I know people who work salery jobs that is actually physically demanding and higly repetitous. I'm sure tyson is hard work in itself but I'm sure they get their breaks and lunches also.

Until about 2 months ago, my Dad had worked 6 days a week, every week, for a year. He is a salaried worker and doesn't receive time and a half for any overtime. He's been there for over 40 years.
