Apparently, it's a constant state of vigilance.

maybe the next time someone needs to put down an animal they can leave their children at home or with a sitter.

it's not always about being afraid of being attacked.

Joseph, I admit that I am ignorant on the subject of guns but isn't there a difference between a loaded gun and keeping one in the chamber??

The interview with the guy from Duncan Gun Shop was very informative.
He said that if you just don't keep a round in the chamber, a child won't have the strength to ****it and there's no problem. Too many people think that they need to keep one in the chamber for emergencies, but they don't realize that they create their own emergencies by doing that!

A unloaded gun is useless if you need to use it. What are you going to do ask the person attacking you to hold on so you can load your gun? Do you think the police carry with out having their gun loaded?

if the baby was in the carseat as reported, should it not have been able to reach the gun

Fox 8 reported that the family lives on a farm. The father had to put down an animal for some reason with the gun and placed the gun in the door of the truck and inadvertently forgot about it. That's how the baby got it.

The baby is supposed to be moved out of CCU soon, possibly tonight.

Anti, my stepfather has told me the same thing but why don't more people know and practice this then?

This is why I don't like guns. I love venison and know lots of responsible hunters but guns just scare me because of stories like this.

Praying for the boy to recover, so tragic.

An investigation is underway in Wilkes County after a 2-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the chest Sunday night.

The Wilkes County Sheriff's Office said the child found a .380 semi-automatic handgun from the driver's side of the door of the vehicle the child was occupying.

Investigators said the boy fired the gun and was struck in the chest. The shooting happened in the 400 block of Chuckwood Road in Thurmond.

The parents took the toddler in a private vehicle to the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital emergency room in Elkin for treatment.

The boy was then airlifted to Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem for further treatment.

As of Tuesday morning, the boy's condition is unknown, according to authorities.
