If the Company does not pay you then you can take the expensive off your taxes.

Unless the laws have change only if you are considered self employed can you deduct work expenses

It's good policy to only reimburse instead of advance for meals, etc...that way you have a receipt and know what company money is used for. No need in creating any possible liability of the company by "accidently" paying for booze, etc. This may create a hardship though on those that eat more extravagant when they know that the company will be paying as opposed to if they were home.

Never received a cash advance from any company I worked for. When crews were sent out, the supervisor had a cash advance to pay for the crew's meals, etc. Booze, ciggies, etc were the employees responsibility

When I opened my own business, I followed the above policy, the crew leader had enough cash to take care of the above, a credit card to pay for gas and motels.

This is all based on their travel reimbursement policy. There are some very specific regulations regarding the payment of employees who are away from their regular work location, if you are an hourly employee typically you have to be paid for your time as you are travelling to and from the job assignment, as well as some other specific times.

If you are contracted labor, different rules apply.

No the company does not have to pay you per deim before you leave. I have worked for some companies that do this, but they do not have to.

They can have you front the money and you do reimbursement, or if you were hired knowing that this would happen, you would be responsible for it all, and then you can take it out on taxes as, "non-reimbursed expenses."

Most times, my per dimes were always submitted and reimbursed...not given in advance...

But then, I never worked for the carnival

The only thing I know is the boss does not go with them on the road he calls the hotels and pays over the phone for them to stay for however long, he does not provide money to eat unless you ask and even then only some people get it, others that ask do not, I just thought they had to give per diem before they left. He told them $20 a day but they only get paid every 2 weeks and he puts it on the employees check

Maybe the employees with more time on the job and a good track record of productivity get more per dime money.

The workplace is not a democracy...don't look for "fair"

There should be a written company policy. Some will provide an advance if needed, others expect you to charge on your credit card which isn't due for 30+ days. One of my employers pays me when he gets paid, sometimes 60 to 90 days later but I understood that upfront.

There generally has to be someone in charge of the money....if you are riding in a vehicle with others and they have the funds to purchase fuel and food to transport and feed everyone...what do you need the money for?

I can understand why a supervisor or whomever is in charge of the money on these trips is the only one to possess it...in other words...if they gave everyone the same allowance money...then every time you stopped to fuel up...you would have to ante up also and same with food allowances.

If "he" doesn't like it, "he" can go work somewhere else.

The only money that he gives is a gas card, they pay for own meals and he does pay for lodging but if employees ask for money to.go on the road he gives 3 or 4 people the money and not the other people that ask also

These companies generally do pay for meals and hotel rooms...if one gets injured on the job...then workmans compensation will take over...of course that is another long drawn out process.

Ok so if someone does not have the money to eat on and they get sick and hurt on the job isnt there a liabilty for the company considering the employer will give a few people per diem but not others

Companies aren't required to offer a per diem. I think they can probably do whatever they want.
