i don't know how you can wait tables for 20 years and still think about what you make per table, or per night. you have to look at the money you make per month, or per year.
if you cant wrap your head around that, then you are going to be disapointed every... single... day.
get past it. accept the good with the bad, put your nickels in your jar, and go back and do it again tommorrow

Face it Wilkes County, your county is full of Republicans and they don't want to pay their fair share of anything. Bunch of free-loaders! How can you be surprized they don't want to tip you hard-working people. If you are a woman waitress, the man waiting tables will make more than you and McCain supports it completely. Wake up America. Vote for Obama!

I agree with that freshair...the Sunday morning church crowd was always the worst tippers...I figured they gave it all to God....lol

I've never been a server but have several relatives that have and they ALL agree that the absolutely cheapest and worst tippers of all were the after church crowd on Wed nights and Sundays and they were the most demanding and often the rudest. The 2nd worst were families with kids, especially on the kids eat free nights.. The best tippers were usually adult men.

Well I agree with the comment about sagebrush. I work in a restaurant myself and if my GM allowed us to wait on our tables with poor attitudes such as theirs we would be out the door fast. Not everyone there has a bad attitude but theirs a lot that do and im not saying it to be ugly. Just smile, be a little friendlier and we may come back. Anyways, I also appreciate you all's tips as well. I love seeing the 18% and up that I always get it's helping me pay my way through college! :o) Much Luv to you great tippers!

footballboy, I can tell you that before I went to work for Lowe's, I was a server here in Wilkes and the Lowe's employees were my worst tippers. I would have six guys come in at a time and run me to death and if I got fifty cents left on that table I was **** lucky.

Also, I don't think you know everybody at Lowe's to stop them from eating at a certain restaurant in Wilkes and from a server that you do not know. At the rate that servers make why would you even want to make it any harder on them. Waiting tables is a hard job and most people who give bad service do not wait tables for 20+ years. They get weeded out very quick. She is asking for a reasonable tip for reasonable service and you guys are blowing it out of proportion. How do you know she is a bad server? I can tell you that there are a lot of people in Wilkes who do not tip regardless. Some of the girls I worked with at Lowe's never tipped and I use to say something to them or either leave a tip for them because I was embarrassed. Just because this girl did not get tips does not mean she is not a good waitress. It could mean that she waited on one of the many people here in Wilkes that do not tip regardless of service. Just because people work at Lowe's does not mean they are all big tippers. They are just like everybody else - some tip, some don't.

look i am a cook somewhere and the waitresses i work with sometimes don't get tips. And they only make 2.45 an hour. a lot of times it's not the waitresses fault they try t do everything they can so people will tip. but there are some people who are set in their ways and won't tip and then there are the teenagers that come through and don't leave crap. and then there are some that will make comments on not having enough money for something or such and they come in there with just enough to eat with or jst to get something to drink and doesn't tip anything either. i used to be a waitress and it's aggravating when you don't get tips when you know you were nice and did your job to fullest.

I waited tables for a long time, here in Wilkes as well as 2 other counties. I will tell you this ... you don't make as good in tips in Wilkes as you do other counties.

Thing that got me was, those that you knew had money and could tip well {such as doctors or other professionals} do not. I guess it's the greed issue ... if you have a lot you have to have more and more ....

I always made sure to give good service like I would want to receive and I know that makes me harder on people that wait on me too. I always leave a tip ... how well I was waited on, the waiter's attitude, as well as whether or not my glass stayed empty for long {big pet peeve of mine} determined how much {as well as how busy they were}. If my food was not good ... that was not my server's fault. If the kitchen messed up an order I usually took the blame in the customer's eyes ... that's not right, just part of the job.

When I waited tables, I also refilled drinks for my fellow server's tables, took out their food if I had extra time, etc. That's just my nature, to help others. I love to work around people and really enjoyed my job. If I was having a bad night, I made sure not to let my customer's know that.

I did work w/ several that thought their tip should be automatic even when they were too busy chatting w/ friends to do their job. It's those that make it hard on the one's that actually care about their customers.

Also, I never knew that the only money you got waiting tables was tips until I actually worked in it. The restaurants are supposed to pay min. wage if tips didn't add up, slow night, and when you were doing clean up work; but, the one's I worked in DID NOT!

Usually our pay checks for 2 weeks were less than $10 if they weren't zero. Taxes for all of your income {tips and hourly} were taken out of the $3 per hour.

Don't get me wrong ... if you do a good job and enjoy your job you can make good money.

I agree with Lawdoll, as a former server and server trainer myself, if a waitress flat out sucks, I WILL NOT leave a tip. I will also let the manager as well as the server know why I am not leaving a tip.

Tips are not guaranteed, they are earned. If you do a decent job, you will receive a decent tip...if you do an outstanding job, you will receive an outstanding tip. We have been know to tip 50% of our bill for the right level of service.

I can honestly say in 10 years of waiting tables, I was only stiffed once, and it was my fault. I was having a bad day, and didn't give the level of service I should have. Needless to say, I left work after that table was finished and went home for the afternoon. I wouldn't have been a good waitress to anyone that day, so it was better for me not to ruin everyone's experience that came into the resturant. (HINT HINT...manager will normally understand if you are having an incredibly horrible day and let you go home instead of running of the customers....not to be used as an excuse again and again to be lazy...this will cost you your job)

It is simple, make sure the drinks are at least half full, the food is prompt and hot, you are available if needed by the customer, and be nice...very simple steps to a good tip. =)

Best of luck with the no tip situation

"Tipping is common Edicuite, put your self in their shoes what if you were making $3.00 a hour would you not want someone to tip you for waiting on them hand and foot???"

Common etiquette is the issue. Society says I should tip regardless of the quality of the service. Tipping is meant to be a reward for superior service, thus providing incentive for servers to go the extra mile for their customers.

If a server waits on me hand and foot, they get a nice tip. If they ignore me the bulk of the time, they get nothing.

well it does not surprise me that that would come up.... I have been a waitress and i know that if you are not having the best of attitudes then you will not get a tip and if u give the customer **** service then you cant expect anything either.... point blank bad attitude NO TIP !!!! not from me

I can only remember a few times in my entire life that an experience was so bad that I did not leave a tip. If you can't afford to leave a few bucks without finding and excuse or reason not to, then go to a fast food joint.

Baby Girl 2009 : The reason why you tip when a person has bad manners, temper or attitude, and does not wait on you the way that they were trained: For one COMMON EDICUITE, (know anything about that?) Also have you ever stopped to think that they might not have been trained in a propper manner?
Who's to say that it is not that person's first day and the establishment is short handed and your server was just thur into their job with very little training, (maybe a little overwhelmed?) If their service is that bad why don't you call their attention to it in a nice polite manner, maybe ask them if they are having a bad day or if their is a problem that you may help them resolve.

TO EVERYONE: HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED TO THINK ABOUT HOW YOU ARE TREATING YOUR SERVER ( your dispistion may be the reason that you are getting treated the way that you are getting treated)
I still am and have been for many years a Customer Service Manager and I have always treated my customers the way that I want to be treated, in return they get the service that they want and I have happy customers that keep coming back!!!

I subscribe to the Mr. White philosophy on tipping:

I don't tip because society says I gotta. I tip when somebody deserves a tip. When somebody really puts forth an effort, they deserve a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, that ****'s for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doin their job.
