My first guess would be 1-3" of snow/sleet Monday followed by freezing rain late in the day into Tuesday morning then cold rain Tuesday morning before finally ending as light snow flurries.

I'll update closer to the event.

Energy from the north will interact with energy from south that will form a low pressure system around northern Alabama that will either track up the west side of the Appalachians or the most likely track I believe right up through the Piedmont of North Carolina this track will indeed give us some snow to begin with but the all snow lovers this one is not it it will be a mess by Monday evening going in the night time hours with the main precip being freezing rain that is the way I still see it today!

This is from accu-weather...... Monday early am and pm forecast..Cold with periods of snow, accumulating 1-3 inches......Monday night forecast....Snow and sleet, some heavy, accumulating a coating to an inch;...... storm total snowfall 3-6 inches
........Interesting that they are putting up a "COATING OF UP TO 1INCH"......

Yes WcSport......I see that they have down-graded......New model runs now are really going crazy......Here is new data from NWS!

AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE BEGINS TO DEVELOP
 OVER EASTERN TEXAS SUNDAY NIGHT.
AS THIS LOW TRACKS EAST AND DEEPENS
 THROUGH THE DAY MONDAY...
A WARM FRONT WILL GLIDE OVER THE ARCTIC HIGH...
PRODUCING LIGHT SNOW ACROSS THE REGION.
AS THIS LOW APPROACHES THE TENNESSEE VALLEY...
A WARM NOSE WILL BEGIN TO ENTER THE AREA...
POSSIBLY CHANGING SNOW OVER TO A WINTRY MIX OF SLEET,
RAIN OR FREEZING RAIN. CONFIDENCE IS HIGh
ON A WINTER STORM FOR THE AREA
BEGINNING MONDAY...
HOWEVER P-TYPE REMAINS THE BIGGEST QUESTION.
MODELS CONTINUE TO JUMP AROUND WITH THE TRACK OF THE LOW.
IF THE LOW TRACKS NORTH FROM THE TENNESSEE VALLEY
AND REMAINS WEST OF THE APPALACHIANS...
P-TYPE WILL CHANGE FROM SNOW TO SLEET TO RAIN
MONDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT.
IF THE TRACK IS FARTHER SOUTH AND EAST OF THE APPALACHIANS
A LONGER DURATION OF SNOW IS EXPECTED WITH A CHANGE OVER
TO SLEET/RAIN OCCURRING LATER MONDAY NIGHT.
DYNAMICS AND LIFT WITH THIS SYSTEM ARE VERY IMPRESSIVE
ESPECIALLY AS THE LOW APPROACHES THE AREA.
UPWARDS OF AN INCH OF LIQUID IS LIKELY...
BUT AT WHAT P-TYPE IT FALLS AS IS ANOTHER QUESTION TO
ANSWER.
WE WILL KEEP P-TYPE SIMPLE WITH RAIN/SNOW.
WE WILL ALSO KEEP SNOWFALL LIGHT TO MODERATE
AND NOT SPECULATE ON AMOUNTS AT THIS TIME.

the storm is going to ride under the mountains i am sure but how much cold air from ground up is what really the models will have a super tuff time sorting out can the wedge hang in long enough when the heavy moisture gets in? If so could mean more snow or more likely more sleet to freezing rain

Friends it is OK to be confused!....LOL...The models are too!!!......This event is still over 60 hours away!!!!!...That is...... depending on a 2 am Monday start time.......If I was laying out a forecast based on strictly the data I have "Right Now"......I would say 3 to 6 inches of snow and sleet is very possible......and a mixed bag of Snow/Sleet/ Freezing Rain and just plain rain on the back side as the storm winds down and pulls away Tuesday.......But I have a feeling new model runs and the data they create will paint a better picture of what is in store.....That said.......More model runs = more data, which = a lot better handle by this time to morrow....so any amounts that are being put up right now are really just a guess......Ok now I will say this......AccuWeather has said 4 to 8 inches for this last 2 days......

That is exactly what I said, except with inflated, fabricated numbers.

We will know for sure Tuesday morning.

In our area, there are so many factors that have to come together at a precise time in order for snowfall to occur, it is difficult to prognosticate accurately. That is through no fault of the meteorologists, but I tend to be a bigger fan of those sites that say "maybe, but we just do not know at this time". Ray's weather is good for that, and I appreciate the honest takes that their site has in these instances.

What we know for sure: It is going to be cold as crap through Monday. Whether or not we get rain, snow, or a freezing mix is all up to the track of the low pressure that will be dipping through the gulf, and how much warm air overwhelms the middle layer of the atmosphere when/if moisture finds its way to us.
