Millers Creek Fire Tax Increase

How in the world did the county not have a way to refill bottles any scuba shop could do it. A compressor able to fill SCBA tanks should have been no big deal for the county

The county did not purchase on until about 1973 or 1974. I was, best I remember, over $10k then. A very large contingent of firemen attended the meeting that night. I think the county has replaced the unit at least 4 times since then. Several departments have stepped up and bought units for their stations. The required filtration system can cost as much or more than the compressor. It is not something that you can run out to Harbor Freight to buy. North Wilkesboro has a Navy surplus unit back then, very, very slow and poor filtration. I ended up with bronchitis several different time from breathing air from that unit.

Maybe you should quit ya beaching and find out what it costs to operate a fire department. Airpacks are over $10k each, protective clothing close if not more than that. The equipment does not have infinite life span. OHSA and NFPA regulations are updated regularly and many times make the equipment obsolete. NC Department of Insurance has regulations that must be met. The rating bureau makes periodic inspections and determines the FD rating which has a direct bearing on your insurance cost. Fire trucks also do not have an infinite life if the department is trying to maintain there insurance rating.

The SUV's you speak of belong to Wilkes EMS and is staffed by a paramedic. He responds to all major calls.

Millers Creek is also certified for rescue.

When I got on a fire department that department operated on less than $7,500 from taxes, donations, and fund raisers. But our equipment was functionally obsolete, protective clothing was something you wished for, SCBA's were not used because Wilkes did not have a system to refill the bottles. There are many of the early volunteers that are suffering from lung, heart, and cancer because of their willingness to service without todays protective equipment..

Woe is the department that has an injury caused by lack of training or protective equipment. NCDOL OSHA and blood sucking lawyers are waiting to jump on that case.

Maybe you should contact management instead of just whining.

I mean...again.

We're good Green, but history has shown us they didn't "miss" it.

Conrad, sorry I misunderstood your comment. I guess the auditors missed the swicys off topic comment.

The righteous are still wondering why swucy's rant is still up.

CONRAD

Posted 10:12 pm, 05/15/2020

So tell us what part of swucy's rant had anything at all to do with the OP.

Greenvet

Conrad, rant? It is a discussion.

CONRAD

Yet swucy's rant is still up, very interesting!

Instead of beating a dead horse, call the county commissioners and demand that they not grant MCFD a tax increase. It's time to hold the line on spending. MCFD has a huge tax base. MCFD needs to budget "what they need" not "what they want".

Daisy, unprecedented amount of people out of work. Many families having difficulty buying necessities for their family.
Seems a 170,000 tax increase is excessive.
The fire chief needs to explain where it is spent.

Why does Millers Creek Fire department need more money? They already get more tax money than any other Fire department in Wilkes County.

Why does Millers Creek need so much extra tax?

Drumpf is just now understanding the importance of testing. He's wasted so much time at the federal level he's set back the recovery several months...that's a best-case scenario.

Can you imagine the economic consequences if a slow recovery without adequate testing and tracing results in a spike in cases? Which is exactly the warning we were given by the experts today.

FINS, that's what Trump says, but let's just wait and see. The economists predictions are a lot more dire than

that. Trump also said that Covid-19 would be over quickly.

That's a huge false flag. Current unemployment is a short term issue and will be working its way back down very quickly.

Greenvet

Unemployment at highest rate since the Great Depression and you think a tax increase is necessary?

Its just 3 cents. Trump just gave you $1200
