On another (but related) note: Don't most of us remember some educators (teachers) who had kids of their own but STILL managed to not show much compassion for the children of others?
I don't think that having (or not having) children of one's own is an important variable here.

Now, exactly how many biological kids did Mother Teresa have? It is still a poorly thought out opinion. In fact, some people could be more compassionate because they do not have to put up with their own kids. I have several relatives in education, and they are childless. I think they are and were better educators because they had no children. One family member paid for a poor minority child’s education at college. Do you think they would have done that if they had children of their own? I do not think so.

My goodness. . . I can not help but wonder what would happen if Mr. Byrd tried to attend every game, event, graduation, celebration or party held at our schools. The people from Northern South High would complain that he was seen cheering for the kids from Western East High. God forbid that he attend a event at your child's school and not come to my child's school!

troubled, he is an administrator. There are school counselors, teachers, psychologists, social workers, and nurses who work with hurting children. Those are specialized professions.

Again...... for those who have reading difficulties, I DID NOT SAY you could not be compassionate. Comprehension here people!!! I said it is difficult to know how someone feels UNLESS you have experienced what they are going through!!

I guess oncologists should just leave the profession, you know, unless they've had cancer themselves. Otherwise, they have no idea what their patients are going through. Pretty silly logic, isn't it?!

Anyone can see that this is a personal attack by someone with grudges. That is a dumb comment about he cannot be compassionate because he does not have children, I guess Jesus could not be compassionate either since he did not have his own biological children. What a shame!!
Our commisssioners are responsible for condition of the schools. Do you remember the penny tax cut you received a few years ago? I hope you enjoyed your Wendy burger because that is about what you could have purchased with your tax cut. Just think what improvements could have been done with a Million dollars!

I didn't say you can't show compassion. I said it is difficult to know how these folks feel if you have not walked in their shoes. And you can say it is ridiculous all you want but here is my take on it. I have never dealt with divorce, I can be sympathetic toward someone who is dealing with it. I have never had to go through it, so I truly don't know. I have on the other hand, lost a parent. I know the pain and loss that I have felt and can truly tell someone it will get better, but the hurt never leaves. I have been there. I know. There is a difference. He has no children, therefore he cannot truly know how it feels to have a hurting child.

That's a ridiculous statement, to say that people without kids can't so compassion to children.
If the superintendent was at any of our school events I would have never known. I remember him being at graduation and that was it.
Stop being a whiney parent that didn't get their way. Spend your time volunteering at your kid's school instead of online complaining.

Because of confidentiality I can't be very specific, but I have dealt with him on several occasions. In the beginning, I was impressed. Now not so much. He seemed concerned and helpful. Now I am lucky to get a response. This is just my opinion.... I truly think it is hard to be compassionate and caring about kids if you don't have children. It is hard to imagine how parents, grandparents, teachers, caregivers feel if you have never walked in their shoes. Not to say I don't think Mr. Byrd is a good person, I don't mean that at all. It is just hard to show compassion/caring if you have never been there.

Personally, I believe that Dr Byrd is doing a better job than Steve Laws ever did. Dr. Laws was brought in here to get rid of the "Good Old Boy" system that had been in place for decades. He tried to put a stop to "family" hiring practice's. Unless they were truly qualified. The WCS BOE brought him in here to clean house.
He was brought in here as a axe man, to get rid of the dead weight. The ones who hated him are the ones who came in to "draw" a paycheck and nothing more.
He was brought in here to bring WCS out of the dark ages and into the real world of technology. He put technology in "ALL" children's hands, not just the elite.
He worked tirelessly on getting the early college up to full song, so our children who were not born with silver spoons in their mouths, could get a 2 year college degree by the time they graduated high school, at little to no cost to the family.
He pushed you to be the best you could be.
He would not take "NO" for a answer
He wanted what he wanted and he found away to get it.
He ask no Quarter......and gave none..
If you were under performing or not performing at all, he had a eye to eye with you, and you either shaped up or you shipped out.
He brought in new faces, new blood, younger, bolder thinkers.
He brought in Community In Schools. Which has proven to be one of the best moves any Superintendent has ever made. They have helped so many "at risk" children.
When it was obvious that past work related practices were wasting time, money, and other valuable resources..... He would listen to the same lame excuse of the old the good ole boys club, which was tired, and worn out... and he would get blood red in the face and yell..".I do not want to hear the excuse"......
"But Dr.Laws....this is how "WE" have always done it"....Dr.Laws was here for change.....not the same ole, same ole status quo, of past superintendents,
Dr.Laws was a visionary, and was either hated or loved. You either were on board or you did not hang around along. I had total respect for him and he ate my lunch for me on more then one occasion, He inspired all of us to be the very best we could be.
His leadership skills were unsurpassed by any, past of present Superintendents. He made us want to be a better WCS employee and a better person..
Was Dr.Laws perfect? NO! None of us are. But most employees of WCS know what he did was right for WCS as a whole.
The haters of this board are going to hate and bash, but it does not change or alter the facts.
I have listed but a few of the many good things Dr.Laws did for WCS.
I hope someone who is now employed by WCS, can someday, say the somethings about Mr Byrd, as I am retired now, and really other then hearsay, cannot remark one way or the other.

I see him at the car line at Mountain View every now and then helping open doors and what not.
