Judge Bill Brooks Caught

antithesis

Posted 1:23 am, 04/19/2021

How can he sit in judgment of anyone appearing before him in a court of law when he has committed far worse offenses?

Far worse? He failed to include his additional income on his Canon 6 Extra-Judicial Income report... are you sure that you're not making a mountain out of a molehill?

There's no mention that he didn't pay taxes on it or anything, so he wasn't trying to hide it. It was obviously a pretty minor mistake in overlooking a form he was supposed to have filled out. If he didn't pay taxes on it, though, that would be a whole different story.

I get the feeling that some of you have been convicted of a crime, and instead of taking personal responsibility you blame the judge that convicted you...

Hahaha, in what was was I lying, tmann? I literally copied and pasted from the Record's article that was a direct quote from the state's report.

As far as I know, I've never even met Bill Brooks. If I did, it was either not memorable or he didn't tell me his name. I just seem to have that rare Wilkes county ability to both read and comprehend...

A 30 day suspended sentence for a year is what Cashion got wasn't it?

I don't disagree that Cashion's sentence was a complete joke, but I don't know how that's relevant here. The judge in his case was William Wood, and his attorney was Dennis Joyce... I don't think that Bill Brooks was involved at all...

Someone whose username is "antithesis" is apparently one of the following:
(1.) a very close friend of Judge Bill Brooks;
(2.) recruited by Judge Brooks;
(3.) or may even be Judge Brooks himself.
Interesting that someone defends the guilty. Let's all stand with "every word" as stated by the North Carolina Supreme Court. "The honest Judge got caught." And, now he is so sorry, (for getting caught)!
He will be defeated in the next election if he doesn't resign in shame, (as he should).
Idea 💡: Let's all begin a signature drive asking for his removal from the bench. How can he sit in judgment of anyone appearing before him in a court of law when he has committed far worse offenses? And, he's being paid by all of us who pay taxes. Once again, tax dollars are paying the guilty. Brooks, (a so-called Republican; actually a RINO), and those crossing the Mexican border "illegally" are both on the government dole. What's the difference?

A 30 day suspended sentence for a year is what Cashion got wasn't it?? Then, if no other offences occurred within that time frame Everything was erased from being of record?? "Sounds Fair to me", just hope i don't get involved in nothing like that....

Everyone who stands before him should call him what he is. A criminal

He is forbid to serve as executor except for family members. His conduct was a "willful violation that was prejudicial to the administration of justice and brought the judicial office into disrepute."

He seems not to follow the laws for himself.

The Commission stated that his failure to report the extra income is a Class 1 misdemeanor. Punishment for this is typically 1-45 days of "community punishment," so a 30 day suspension is fair... they could have given him a 1 day suspension:

I didn't mean to post the whole thing, sorry about that... the important part was this:

1. On or about April 3, 2009, Respondent, prior to his appointment as District Court Judge and while still in engaged in the private practice of law, prepared and executed wills for two clients, Robert and Mary Grace Crawford. Each will also designated the Respondent as the executor of the respective will. Respondent had no familial relationship with either Robert or Mary Grace Crawford.

2. On or about October 2, 2013, Respondent was appointed to serve as a District Court Judge in Judicial District 23. Respondent received a copy of the Code of Judicial Conduct and ethics training during Orientation for New District Court Judges in early December 2013.

3. On or about March 9, 2014, Robert Crawford passed away. Mary Grace Crawford subsequently died on November 29, 2014. While serving as District Court Judge, Respondent also served as executor of both wills. In that capacity, Respondent admitted both wills to probate and filed inventories and accountings with Wilkes County Clerk of Superior Court until both estates were closed in 2017.

4. At the time Respondent carried out his functions as the executor of the Crawford estates, Respondent knew or should have known that the Code of Judicial Conduct prohibited him from serving as the executor or any type of fiduciary for individuals other than members of Respondent's family. Respondent had known the Crawfords for many years and considered them to be like family, but acknowledges he was not related to them by blood or marriage.

5. During the week of March 14, 2016, Respondent was compensated with a $2,550 commission for serving as executor of Robert Crawford's estate and a $85,320.77 commission for serving as executor of Mary Grace Crawford's estate.

6. Respondent failed to disclose the extra-judicial income he earned from serving as the executor for Robert Crawford and Mary Grace Crawford in 2016 on his Canon 6 Extra-Judicial Income report for the 2016 calendar year and on his Statement of Economic Interest (SEI) filed with the State Ethics Commission for the 2016 calendar year.

7. Respondent knew or should have known that he was required to report the extra-judicial income he received from serving as an executor on both his Canon 6 and SEI disclosures. Respondent has now amended both his Canon 6 and Extra-judicial Income Report and SEI for 2016 calendar year to reflect his additional income.

8. The parties stipulate that the foregoing findings are established by clear and convincing evidence and agree that the factual and evidentiary stipulations shall constitute the entire evidentiary record in this matter for consideration by the hearing panel and that no other evidence will be introduced at the disciplinary recommendation hearing by either party.

So he was hired to be their executor in 2009, when he was a private attorney. He became a judge in 2013, and then they died in 2014.

In 2016 he made a ton of money as a commission for being the executor of their estates, and failed to file it on his Canon 6 Extra-Judicial Income report.

Calling it fraud is a pretty big stretch. He paid taxes on it and it sounds like everything he did was legal, he just failed to file a form with the State Ethics Commission. That sounds like a minor oversight, and for that he was punished with a 30 day suspension.

It is shameful that an individual that judges others and sends them to prison would be let off for committing fraud with a 30 day suspension. This is not enough punishment for someone not reporting income and then serving as an executor when this is prohibited. What else has he done? He has now lost his credibility and does not deserve the respect of the Wilkes County people.

The Associated Press (AP), states that Judge Bill Brooks served as executor for the estates of "two former family friends" at approximately $90,000 and then did not report the income as required by state ethics. If this guy is a trusted family friend, how would he have handled mere acquaintances not considered to be "family friends". I wonder if he disclosed his "extra income" on his state and federal tax forms. If this were you or me, we would probably be heading to prison. He should immediately resign! Shame on greedy rich people. They can never seem to get enough money! Who knows... maybe he will repent, return the monies, disclose anything he may not have been forthcoming on, and go home.

Looks like Judge Bill Brooks got caught with his panties down at his ankles. According to the Wilkes Record website, he was caught being the admin for the Crawford estate and not reporting a serious stash of money from the estate. Slapped on his wristy.
