You need to read the entire response by the NC Supreme Court. Partially it states he had. willful misconduct in office and collecting substantial fees . He charged $90,000 to settle the estates of two people he stated were like family to him even though there were not relatives.

Yea I'd concur that he seems to be a fair minded individual who made a casual mistake.

I also would agree with 168.

I have known Mr Brooks since he first began his law career. Have always found him to be a honest and thorough lawyer who cared about his clients. From the bench he has proven to be the same. One of the few lawyers I trust and I respect him as a judge

Unlike most, if not all, of the posters on here, I am posting under my real name. I am not going to hide behind a screen name.

You really should never post on the internet with your real name, that's Internet 101! Social media screwed it all up by convincing people that they should, but we see how much fraud happens to people now because of it. And how comments come back to haunt people in real life, decades after they posted it.

That's why we all have anonymous usernames, it's much smarter that way

He did NOT steal anything, contrary to what a few on here are saying and some seem to be inferring.

Reading comprehension seems to be a major problem in this county... the man failed to fill out a form, it's not that big of a deal. He filed it on his taxes as income so it's not like he was hiding it or anything, he just failed to dot his i's and cross his t's.

IMHO, a 30 days suspension is excessive... considering that they could have opted for no suspension or a fine instead. And it was a mistake that happened 5 years ago, with no apparent evidence of a repeat.

Tmann,
I think a person can exhibit integrity by admitting their wrong doings (whether intentional or by mistake) and accepting their punishment.

From what I understand Judge Brooks didn't cheat or swindle anyone, not a single person was harmed or suffered by his actions, he committed policy violations, and according to him this was by mistake.

Albert, Judges should be men and women of integrity. Once that trust is broken it's not able to be repaired.

As for voting, you are correct. That is how I will address this.

Tmann,
I disagree but I know what you can do, if Judge Brooks seeks re-election...don't vote for him.

He should resign

All credibility has been lost.

@ poster Marie leveau.
No.i wasn't referring to uou or anyone specific.if it seemed so to you? My apologies.

Here's the main things I took from the article,

In a hearing before the commission on Sept. 11, 2020, Brooks made a statement in which he accepted responsibility for his actions, acknowledged that they were wrong and apologized for them. He also said, "I just did not realize for whatever reason that this could not be done."

As mitigating factors, the commission found that Brooks cooperated, admitted error and showed remorse. The commission also noted that the misconduct at issue appears to be a single event and not recurring.

But it sounds as if some of you wouldn't be satisfied unless Judge Brooks is hanged from the Tory Oak.

BB maybe you should try the Classifieds, some lady/guy had a Nice Jersey for sale, well said it was a Jersey or whatever it was?? Looked more like an OX to me, yet it may have been a designer Breed or along that line...

Unlike most, if not all, of the posters on here, I am posting under my real name. I am not going to hide behind a screen name. I occasionally get on here to check out the Community Voice. Trying to follow some of the conversations, with everyone using a screen name and then some of you using nick names for screen names it is hard to impossible to follow who is talking to/about whom. There is also an unbelievable amount of misinformation disseminated on here.

That having been said, the verbatim information quoted from the newspaper that Antithesis put on here at 3:03 P.M. on 4-18-2021- specifically item #5- plainly states that the findings were that Judge Brooks "...was paid a commission of $2,550.00 by the Estate of Robert Crawford and was paid a commission of $85,320.77 by the Estate of Mary Grace Crawford...."

He did NOT steal anything, contrary to what a few on here are saying and some seem to be inferring.

If he only stole 90,000 dollars that is around 3000 per day. I would be a lawyer for that. But I would not be whatever else he is.

Plus he was prohibited from being an executor for a non family member. That is where the money came from.

I like Judge Brooks myself. If THIS is the worst a Judge can be caught at? P R O V E N?
least of any worries.LEAST.
I've known of him since. His early days as a trial attorney. Always seemed fair to all. At least from my occasional conversation about the guy. Its a little money, not murder. Nor drugs Nor criminal IMO. See ya!
