I should also say that insurance commissioner candidate Natasha Marcus spoke against the rate increases. I didn't see her primary opponent, but I don't know what he looks like. The current insurance commissioner was absent while I was there between 10:00 and 12:00.

Today there's a hearing in Raleigh about the proposed increases in homeowners insurance of over 40% statewide and 99% in coastal areas.

Just wanted to report to y'all from the hearing room. Obviously all the speakers are speaking against the proposed rate increases. I gotta say most speakers are bringing up some good points, but it's mostly old people on fixed incomes and AARP reps complaining about how they retired to NC because it's less expensive here. Young homeowners who are also screwed seem to be absent.

There was one speaker that stood out though. He was a recent transplant from NJ. He said he's in the top 3% of earners in NC and that both he and his wife work remote. He threatened to pick up and leave if the proposed rates are approved.

Anyway, the hearing goes til 3:00. All y'all folks that like to make your voice heard, here's a chance to do so irl! The line to speak is very short. I think you can also speak on zoom, but they're having technical difficulties and no one is paying attention to them.

These rate increases are egregious, so I would encourage you to show up online and at least show that you're paying attention.
