I won't defend a shoddily run business. But you took issue with her "selling everything he owned."

@chindo:: Betrayal, stupid? Maybe wrong, yet seems like one could atleast keep "ONE" place of business up & running or hire someone that could? I'm sure there were no problems picking up Money pouches at sold business'es, seen it many times...

I noticed the exact same thing this morning in the meat dept. They had some really good sales on their cuts of meat, but the sales bin were empty. They had 2 employees for that meat dept on the clock this morning & they can't keep it stocked? What is wrong with this picture? Management needs to wake up and do their job.

I just happened to shop at the IGA just an hour ago. From a person who is a store manager, and I look over every store I go into, I have to say.... blah.
Endcaps at the front of the store have facings maybe 2 products deep of products that have no reason to be together. These are front of the store, prime real estate areas, and being wasted on a few bottles of BBQ sauce.
Empty shelves all around, especially the meat department. It's a half hearted attempt to say "Yep we sell meat"
The products on sale spots are empty. I see Borden cheese on sale, not a pack to find on the pegs. Either this is poor ordering or poor stocking.
Staff with what ever happens, happens attitude.

From personal experience this is store that being just there to be there. I know it has many a shake up in management, but someone needs to come in and turn it around because it will fail if kept under this current standard.

I agree, mother.

To view it as some sort of betrayal is pretty stupid

It's easy to assume and make judgments on someone when you don't know their entire situation. Perhaps he did all the business work and his wife has no idea how to run the businesses. Or maybe she'd like to enjoy a few years of retired life instead of running a business. Just because she chooses to sell them doesn't mean she isn't respecting his memory or all she was left.

Anti, you're wrong on this. I have personally delivered thousands if not millions of pounds of TYSON chicken to walmart distribution centers all over the US.

That's fair.

I know that 90% of their "produce" comes from Mexico, China, and India... where it has little (if any) inspection. When they import back to the US the USDA only inspects 1-2% of the food. Produce is grown in human waste, and they can use whatever antibiotics and hormones they want. Things that would never be allowed here are common in those other countries.

What I'm not sure about, though, is whether "produce" just means fruits and vegetables, or if it includes meat, too.

Like LS77 said, I'm not buying food that comes from Mexico... or really any country outside of the US. Or maybe Canada.

"Who in the world buys food at Walmart?! Surely you know all that crap comes from Mexico and overseas. I seriously wouldn't feed my dog food from Walmart"

I like the 268 IGA, and hate to hear of Bob's widow wanting to close/sell the place; Marie: I couldn't have put it better myself.

The last time I considered buying meat at IGA, I noticed quite a bit labeled Product of Mexico, no thanks.

Huh oh, I didn't know that! There's some juicy gossip afoot, but it's bad news for the people that work there.

Holly Mountain ownes the Coffee Houses, too, right?

It would appear Holly Mountain enterprises has been suffering financially as witnessed by the sale offering on their main office building.

Food Lion is only about 5 minutes down the road from IGA, is about the same price on everything, and has a much better quality than Walmart. They don't carry as much locally-grown produce as Lowes, but anything is better than Walmart. Except maybe the dollar store, but even that's debatable.

But to answer your question, I have no idea about IGA. I drive right by it every day and always forget they're even there. I'm guessing that the old butcher quit or was fired, and they haven't found a qualified replacement that's willing to work for what they're willing to pay.

What's going on Iga? Is it a management problem or what? The frozen food cooler has been out a month and not repaired or replaced yet. No idea whats going on in the meat dept. The cooler is working, where in the heck is the butcher? Many times I have went down there lately and the meat counter be nearly bare. I hate to see a community business go down the hill, but they gotta be losing business. On the other hand, I hate driving all the way to Wal-Mart to get my groceries now too.
