Hey All,Thank you all so much for your help and replies. Documenting the history of Wilkes on DVDs for our future generations is so important since we are slowly loosing our veterans in Wilkes.Hopefully, some of you or someone in your family may be able to answer this, do any of you know how the places listed below got their names? This is a concentration on the North area of Wilkes. We'll need help for others places later. You can post your response here or call 838-6114 or 838-6289 and ask for Fay Byrd.Gristle Tail in TraphillSpringfield TraphillLongbottomAustinHaysMaple GroveOak RidgeCane CreekDehartDockeryDouble CreekJoynes SchoolKnotvilleWhittington SchoolRoaring GapWalnut GroveMcGradyFairplainsDon't forget that we need pictures of old schools, mills, businesses, and churches with a bit of information. Need to get to Fay Byrd at these pickup points: Wilkes Community College Library; Jordan Welborn at Wilkes County Public Library, or at county office building with Aileen Faw.

Bob Ks and The Ideal Grille and a small grocery store used to be located where the Library is now. I have a photo of the site before the changes in my restaurant. I might even have a scanned copy on file. If anyone would like to see it pm me and I'll look for it. If I can't find it you can come by my place and see it for yourselves, I have old school pics of NW all over my walls.

I have a cousin, I cannot remember his first name, he was a Church. He owned a lumber yard in Wilkes and a large store; there's actually a painting of downtown Wilkes and his store is shown. I read somewhere that he actually was the man that pushed for the Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro be built. He supplied building materials and a work force because he felt that a new town needed a church. His picture hangs in the old Wilkes Jail because he was also once sheriff. Need anymore stories just ask, I have tons.

Nutboy, I've been sitting here trying to remember what was originally where the Library is now.....but my mind too has gone blank. Maybe it's because we weren't allowed on 10th street....lol.

Oh gosh, now you've brought up some memories for me too. I remember in 1953, we were still living in Boone and we came down the mountain and bought our first TV from Swoffords. I can remember how excited I was. We were the only ones on our street that had a tv and I too remember how the neighbors used to "swarm" in at night to watch it. LOL, had not thought about that in years. Thanks for the memories.

The name of the "dime store" was Cress Ben Franklin Stores, a rival at the time to Roses. The Allen Theater was owned by Frank Allen, Jimmy, Frank, and Mickey Allen's father. Joe Johnston of Community Grocery fame on Hinshaw Street and 6th Street used to sell tickets there when I was a kid before it burned down.

I can't remember what was located in the spot where the new library is located, but do remember it when it was accross from the origional Lowe's Hardware building.

Just another side, I do remember in 1953 when I went with my parents and brother to Swoffard's to purchase our first television set. Mayor A. A. Cashion and my parents were the only two households on Hinshaw Street to own a T. V. set at that time. During the week, 1/2 of the neighborhood would gather at the Cashion's house and the other 1/2 would gather at our's to watch Arthur Godfrey's show and a few others, and of course on Wednesday and Friday nights they gathered in to watch the boxing matches, one being sponsered by Schlitz Beer and the other by Gillette Razor blades. On these two nights the men and boys gathered in the den and the women in the kitchen. Mom would fix popcorn and some of the other ladies would bring ice tea and other goodies for us to much on while we watched TV. My brother and I would be sent to bed early on some nights.....not sure what the adults were watching then! LOL Yes, those were the days!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

If you would like to see old pictures of the downtown you can go to this website. Click on the old photos link :http://www.downtownnorthwil...A really good book at the library is "North Wilkesboro: The First Hundred Years." It has many old photos. It is also a very interesting read.

Oh yes, 10th was definately NOT a place to be for us "decent" people....lol.

I can remember when I was in the 8th grade, my best friend and I were allowed to go to town on Saturdays...all alone..lol. Our parents would give us around 5.00 and we would hit Cress first, spend a little money there, and always have lunch at Brame Drug. We thought this such a treat to be allowed to do this.....and the fun we did have. Course, we stayed away from 10th street...lol. We would stay downtown for a long time and either walk to my dad's business or my friends grandfather's office and they would bring us home. Such BIG girls we were...lol
