Funeral Processions in the South

Ok. Here are 3 websites concerning superstitions. Chest of books.com " brings bad luck to cross a funeral procession unless you turn your back on it."

" going ahead of the funeral procession or passing a funeral procession is very bad luck and death will follow if you do. " this is from superstition dictionary.

Another site, corsinet.com trivia, "it's bad luck to meet a a funeral procession head on. "

I always thought it was a show of respect, but I think it is clear that it comes from old superstitions.

"Years ago, people thought if you went in front of a dead person's casket, you would be the next to die."

that makes no sense...what about those barbaric viewings you folks participate in..isn't that being in front of a casket???

I read about this a few years ago. It is actually done because of old superstitions. Years ago, people thought if you went in front of a dead person's casket, you would be the next to die. So people are moving out of the way.

And an interesting fact. When my father in law passed away, the last person to view him in the church, was the first person there to die.

Must be a Yankee. In the south we were raised to show respect to peoples families during a funeral.southerners know this and doubt they had to slam on their brake. Were you just irritated that you had to stop and show yours.

Nope, I am a Yankee and we are raised to pull over. You never see folks diss a funeral procession up north, even on the freeway. I always thought it was against the law not to.

There are some old cemeteries on the parkway that are interesting.

it's ok Crypt...they're not there in any way. I love walking cemetaries...lots of history in there!

What about walking around in a cemetary? I try not to step directly on any graves.

I always slow down and pull off of the road when I come across a funeral procession. I don't try to impede traffic because I think that it is rude to try to force others to adhere to my personal expression of respect, but it certainly makes me feel better when the people around me do the same. It's a show of respect. I probably wouldn't do so on a major highway, particularly one with heavy traffic, because of safety issues, but whenever reasonably possible I try to extend the courtesy and respect.

RESPECT....Southern Tradition. No one is in that big of a rush that they can't stop a pay respect for a fellow human being! That's just what you do......when you live here. Why would you even ask a question like that? It might be a stupid tradition to you, but it AIN'T to us.

Thanks Safetyman. My point. IF you do it, then do it safely and legally. I am RARELY in a hurry, so nope, springtime, that isn't it. I just wanted to hear the thoughts of others. Now I know who y'all are out there stopping in the middle of the road...hehe...I ride a moped anyway.

"Is that like passing of such, just dig a hole throw them in it an cover them up unannounced, they were nothing anyway? I'll hush. "

well, marie...silence is golden!

I feel confident enough that you know that is not what I mean.
