Until the early 80's, EBT (food stamps) could not be used for snack foods or soft drinks, but thanks to the snack food industry lobbyists on Capitol Hill, enough money changed hands to sway a vote on allowing these items to be purchased with EBT.
So if you want to blame anyone, blame Congress and the lobbyists.

They lock up fathers that refuse to pay child support, do you not think they should do the same thing with any parent that will not work and support their families? I guess you think they should just give them entitlements and let them live on welfare. looks like double standards to me !!!!!!

Food stamps should be for essentials. Every child deserves to be fed and not go hungry. Childhood hunger is one of the biggest problems we have in the county and I support a lot of programs to try to make sure kids don't are fed. Samaritan's Kitchen, Hope Ministry, the Back Pack Program for the schools. All good and essential programs. But why would you feed your kids high priced junk food from a gas station on your food stamp dollar? I don't begrudge anyone snacks for their kids, but these kids kept grabbing stuff and handing to her while she was in line and she never once told them no. If you want snack foods, spend your food stamps at Walmart where you can at least get them cheaper. The whole entire $15.00 purchase was all junk food for the kids paid for with food stamps and I personally think that is a bit excessive. I'm more careful with my money than buying expensive stuff at the gas station for kids to snack on. It's called being responsible. Folks really should try it sometime.

She had 4 children in age from 2 to about 7 or so running wild in the place. They picked up candy, soft drinks, 2 or 3 kinds of chips and basically just a lot of junk food that had no nutritional value at all. Then she paid for the $15.00 of junk food with a SNAP card. REALLY? That's how you feed your kids on tax payer dollars?

I posted on this thread earlier that some elderly really NEED help and sometimes younger folks need a hand until they can get back on their feet. But I saw something this morning that really disgusted me. A young woman (and I won't specify hispanic, black or white because it doesn't matter) was in line at a gas station in front of me. She had 4 children in age from 2 to about 7 or so running wild in the place. They picked up candy, soft drinks, 2 or 3 kinds of chips and basically just a lot of junk food that had no nutritional value at all. Then she paid for the $15.00 of junk food with a SNAP card. REALLY? That's how you feed your kids on tax payer dollars?
THAT is what is wrong with the system. You have elderly who need help who either can't get it or get very little and you have someone like that playing the system and abusing it.

I suggest any young person visit the elderly in one of this State's approved assisted care facilities. Ask them how they came to be there and what happened to their home, belongings, family, etc. If you're OK with what what you face one day then go ahead and pay into our system your entire working life.

Spoken like a true self made wealthy man who I hope you never finds him or herself in far too many shoes...I do not live the life in luxury...but I know personally many who live on SSI, receive SNAP, of those as good number are elderly on a fixed income....as a I said I have a budget but can enjoy a movie, a meal at a restaurant, or go to Winston-Salem to do shopping if needed...but I also know families may struggle with meals...I do prepare a casserole for them now and then... I remember when I was in need and received help...I do not belong to a church but growing up I saw a need and as my dad said we do not have much but we can help anyway we can those who have less...it's the Christian thing to do....you are a Christian yes? So be careful to judge everyone who are in line and have a card you can in a heartbeat be them....unless your as diehard follower of Pat Robertson who looks like he has not missed a meal.

That's a great idea. We just need a place like the animal shelter only for humans where we can put these losers. If nobody wants to help them then the shelter will euthanize the losers.
