My question about this is...did any of the "thieves" shuck at least one ear of the corn to see if it was edible? "Roastneers" this time of year, when left on the stalk to be used as silage, the corn kernels have gotten very hard.

I fail to see where the farmer had a "motive".
The cops caught the accused in the act. The cops cited the accused. The farmer/property owner just showed up and confirmed it was his field.
I am sure the farmer had more pressing matters to attend to being it harvest season.

Most of us would probably have shrugged and let the thieves go in this case. Most of us would never steal, certainly not dent corn. The thieves weren't mist of us. We won't know their motives. Maybe they were simply naive. We won't know the farmers motives either. Maybe he was just pissed that someone else had yelped themselves to his hard earned stuff, however small. There's some old saying about hard cassette making bad law. It would be helpful if thieves would limit themselves to stealing the car that the little old lady drives only to church. That way we could all see the black and white of it. Real life will usually be a bit less clear cut. Of course, we have all had fun debating what should have happened here. I surely hope the presiding judge for this case has been reading our comments. Should make their job much easier.

If you are on someone else's property with a dirt bike or a 4 wheeler without their permission, they have a right to be angry. If you are going into their field (that they fertilized, cultivated, planted & put their money & hard work into) and take what is going to be harvested, they have a right to be angry.
I had a former neighbor who would walk their animals to another neighbor's hay field & let the animals graze (without their permission of course!). Now what do you think this did to the value of the hay? Same neighbor thought nothing of letting their horse run through MY yard followed by a kid on a 4 wheeler! In the rain! And when I dared to tell them to get out of my yard, they came back the next day with wirecutters & cut some outdoor electrical lines!
There is only so much you can take. The local farmers have had folks stealing their crops for years but the last few years it has gotten so much worse! How do you know these folks weren't going to load the car full of corn to sell at a flea market? Just because they "only" had pulled 12 ears when they were caught certainly does not mean that was all they were going to take.
A lot of folks seem to think these days that if they see something they want, they have the right to take it. My land is not playground for 4 wheelers & animals. My carport is not a playground for neighbors kids to come up & snoop around my potting bench & my mailbox is not something that curious people can open just to see what the mailman left me!!
My property is my property. Same with these farmers & orchard owners. What belongs to them is theirs. Stay off of it & leave it alone. Respect for others is what this all boils down to. Lots of folks just don't have it these days!

So using the high end of what 2 yellow corn was selling for a bushel on Sept.12th. and to make it simple let's increase it to $4 per bushel and remember that is probably already shelled so a bushel of corn still on the cob would be 0.8 times that so if a bushel of shelled corn is $4 the bushel of corn on the cob would would yield $3.20 of shelled corn. But let's say this was corn was the cadillac of corn and call it $4 a bushel corn on the cob. Now every hillbilly knows there are 48 ears of corn to a bushel and 12 ears is one fourth of 48. So 12 ears of corn are worth less than .. yep you guessed right .. one dollar.

The land owner was not the one who called law enforcement if that is considered the "anger issue" in this event.

Again, the response seems a bit harsh.

If they didn't have permission to be riding a dirt bike on his land he had a right to be angry IMO.

Land owner has anger issues! Doesn't seem like to long ago someone was looking at his pond and he chased them in his vehicle and them on a dirt bike and he cut them off wrecking them.Nothing ever came of it....I guess corn is more important!

I meant it as a complimentary joke, really, but pretty girls have always been able to get away with just about anything. All they have to do is bat those pretty little eyes, and molesting a child is sentenced to house arrest -

Only unattractive people should be imprisoned? The attractive people should do some sort of community service? That seems a bit biased.
