There is no reason why churches and nonprofits shouldn’t pay tax on their facilities and holdings. They enjoy the same police and fire protection that the rest of society enjoys. As an institution, they should pay their fair share.

As far as threatening to taking tax exemptions from church's I doubt there is a politician in NC dumb enough to propose that. It would be the biggest voter turn out on record to send them home regardless of party affiliation.

yes what I have read on here guys is so true our church wants to party have dinners go on trips but no funds for the elder people in need if they ask for help they say we can't help sorry they want us to die so they can go on with there good times .

Well if you see that in your church then are you reaching out and doing anything yourself? Since you did say OUR church. Also are you saying your church wants people to die ?

Hopefully, the OP can do more research and come back with better data.

Not a single person froze to death during our recent storm. There is a big difference between homeless and shelterless.

Couples without children can tell you best how to raise children

The shelter was closed because the people did not come, it is really hard in this type of weather to get to a shelter.

As far as the liability insurance I had mentioned earlier it isn't as easy as saying "oh, our insurance covers our members already from falling." It has to be included in your policy that you operate as a shelter in emergencies. You need it stated in that policy that it covers staff, volunteers and clients. If you serve food that too has to be stated. We had set up a little food pantry and our insurance agent made us take it down, he said unless you have insurance covering that I wouldn't do it. If someone gets sick from food that is given at your organization you can be sued. And while most people won't do that it only takes one.

The bottom line is there are many wonderful resources in Wilkes County, but it also boils down to people taking responsibility and helping their fellow neighbor. If you are on here bashing your church, maybe you are going to the wrong church. And maybe instead of pointing your finger at what others should be doing, what exactly are you doing?

Quite a lot of the evidence of what churches do or do not do is anecdotal at best.

A few years back whenever a person did not or would not prepare for winter.A person would commit a minor crime and get 90 days in jail.3 hots and a cot for the winter!

Does Anti ever contribute to a non- profit organization? It appears that her opinions are the only correct answers.Any non- profit organization including the towns,county,state,and federal governments do not generate income.The income comes from taxes for the governments and donations by the other non-profits.Ask a Wilkes county resident what her local church has done for her.The Toy Store has over 1600 children that will get toys and other necessities for the holidays,provided by donations from the local churches.There are names of needy Seniors in some local businesses that someone will sponsor.There are so many needs and not enough resources in Wilkes to fill all these needs.

Hopefully, anti will recognize and admit that there are many ways to take care of those in need. Each church will ultimately be accountable to God for how they corporately and their members individually cared for the less fortunate. Whether or not there was a state law compelling their actions will be a minor issue.

Guess he had his reasons ? Remember when Texas had all that flooding, and Joel Osteen did'nt dare open the doors to his mega church to help ANYONE ? But he'll still gladly accept your donations ? You may call that Christian ? I sure as heck don't ? (love to know his reasons )

I have volunteered at the homeless shelter on 18. Each year they send letters to every single church in Wilkes County asking for items, donations, and volunteers. They usually get a whopping 2 churches at the most reply with help. I do believe churches could be doing more to help the community and not just at Christmas time either.

It cost a lot of money to operate a shelter. Couldn't the 8 people stay with friends.

They closed the emergency shelter in Wilkes tonight.

We can't even support one shelter for more than one day...

I’m not understanding the troll comments but others has tried to offer a different opinion. I’m trying to follow your logic about churches but I don’t get what makes you think churches hasn’t done anything to help the homeless Antithesis? I have stated on here I know several that has and does just because they don’t offer them a room to sleep in during bad weather doesn’t mean they aren’t doing anything, have you not opened your eyes to what’s going on around you or what others has said on this thread ?
