Schools would make excellent shelters, having gymnasia, cafeteria and multiple pee pee pots. They exist in every community, are well maintained and have up to code everything.

Tax Free Status

Are there any other local facilities that stake the same claim?

This is a pretty good thread actually, but should churches be the only ones called out?

Some prominent folks that have been trying to open another homeless shelter for years.Every empty building they mention to the Town of NW,Town of W,and the County of Wilkes is shot down.Same excuse each time not in my neighbor hood.Even asked about the old Wiley Thrape supermarket on Rock Creek road, same response those folks does not want it.One more thing look @ all those school gyms in Wilkes 28 schools.Extra practice gyms at some schools.

In our little winter storm 3 people died, 1 when a tree fell on a truck, 1 while on hospice care, and 1 had a heart attack going to a shelter.

Not a single person died from lack of a shelter.

Two very different statements.

What Anti said: "If each church would help 1 or 2 homeless people, then there would be no homeless people left that needs help."

What Fins claims that Anti said: "You said if every church would help one or two, then there would be no more homeless in NC".

You know to keep from violating the separation of church and state, you could make this a condition for all other Non-profits. Why are you only suggesting churches? ;)

All may have seen this, yet it is caring for others as much for ones self..

Liability, in case someone gets hurt, ill or attacked inside of a shelter or any kind of discrimination.

It's to protect the shelter and those who are employed or volunteer there.

Spanx, I didn't know shelters had to have a insurance. What's the insurance for?

Although it is always funny how people are always throwing up church and state, except when it doesn't meet their argument.

An emergency shelter is only open for a short period of time, and it takes several volunteers to make this happen. There are several things to consider, do you have the ability to get food, do you have the liability insurance to cover it, do you have enough bathrooms, and do you have the necessary volunteers to run the shelter. One must also consider access, is it easy to get to? Do they have electricity and running water? And in the case of this latest storm do they have snow removal? And again can you get the volunteers there, just because there is a church on every corner it doesn't mean their members live within walking distance or easy travel distance.

It is easy to make a blanket statement, but when you look at the reality of making it happen it isn't always as easy as saying "They should do it because....."

the critics seem to think that every single penny should be spent on the homeless..

the road to charity has many avenues

I think the disconnect here is in seeing the “churches” as a resource to be called upon and managed by non church entities who do not respect or promote the primary mission of the church.

It is certainly appropriate to be critical of churches who do not feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc.
Last year, much criticism was directed at Joel Osteen’s organization after the historic flooding in Texas. They finally responded, but at that point it seemed a hollow gesture.

In a fair society, church organizations and any other traditional non profit group would still pay tax on their holdings and investments.

Finally, many critics of religious groups forget the excellent work of organizations like Samaritans Purse and the many fine efforts of churches in response to crisis.

Very nice of you to think about the homeless antitheses, but a lot drink & smoke cigs & no church is going to allow that. Also they'd probably have to lock the doors & hire someone to watch over them in case a fight was to break out. So many things could go wrong that could end up costing somebody lot's of money.

I'd say no, but it would be nice if some of the churches opened up as shelter until the weather passes. You cannot interfere in the church anymore then the church can interfere in government business. It's in the constitution. That would be like running hotel business. Where in order to keep the church, you have to rent out to tenants who can then have residential rights that will take place in court.
Though if folks are worried about drugs and stuff. Just have the church regulate on what they can do like have all possession in backpack and will be under supervision at the desk, and that doors to other rooms will be locked and off limits with beverages and food handed out in the same common area.
Any possession you need can be got at the front desk under supervision and possibly might have the bag checked for drug possession. If any is found, tell them to leave or to throw it away and if caught doing drugs. Call police and have them locked up.
