Consumer Reports wasn't impressed.
Just pulled the following off Amazon. It sums the situation up quite succinctly. Like I said in my earlier post, google it yourself if you want to know. Careful which links you trust though because the manufacturer slips a lot of "sponsored" links in those things. There was a huge thread oh here @ 6 mths back, a lot of people posted some very comprehensive data on these things, it'd be good if someone could find it.
Amazon review:
209 of 211 people found the following review helpful: 1.0 out of 5 stars Edenpure is a rip off per Consumer Reports, September 17, 2008 By Investigator (Boulder, CO USA) - See all my reviews Reported by: John Matarese
Viewers have been asking me about a space heater advertised in newspapers and on Paul Harvey's radio show the past few weeks. It's the EdenPure space heater .... a heater so "advanced," it can supposedly cut your heating bill up to 50%.The cost: $400...four times the price of most heaters. Our partners at Consumer Reports magazine have tested it and other heaters. Is the EdenPure Amazing?
The results of the test of the heavily advertised EdenPure were not promising. The $400 EdenPure ended up at the bottom of the ratings. It was the worst performing of 20 space heaters tested. Top Performing Heaters
Top rated: The Honeywell Electric heater HZ-519, for just $60. (It's sold by Home Depot and Amazon.com, among other stores, but it may be in short supply, due to Consumer Reports' review. Honeywell makes some similar models wtihout the digital display that you may want to consider.)

I got one similar that was called a Comfort Zone (which is an infared heater) Paid around $450 for it & sent it back. Could not feel heat when you were sitting right in front of it. My $40 space heater did a better job. I agree - anything that sounds to good to be true - probably is...

"Additionally the BBB presented additional challenges regarding the company product, Edenpure Infrared Heater and its ability to save Up To 50% off their Heating Bill. The company voluntarily provided documentation for clarification. According to a company representative and information submitted by the company, consumer should understand that the company uses zone heating as the basis of their substantiation and that Edenpure Infrared Heater is not to be used as a means of primary heating source. In addition, the implementation of the unit may affect wattage usage. For more information on zone heating visit the Department of Energy, winter energy saving from lower thermostat settings at http//consumerenergy.com." From BBB previous link.

Those portable kerosene heaters work best, though obviously you have to be cautious around them.
Heat pumps being to FAIL around 34 degrees and last winter my mega-heat-pump was running all emergency coils just to keep my house at a toasty 50 degrees... I've never seen an electric meter run faster in my life.
So I shut it down and bought one of those kerosene heaters. Takes 10 minutes to warm a room from 30 to 80... I used it in the room with the air intake for the heat pump and it heated the whole house fine.
Just have to shut it off before you go to bed! 2 gallons of kerosene will give me about 24 hours of burntime. Way cheaper than electric.
Like I said, just be mindful around the unit.
Anyone know of any good fireplace inserts?

There's nothing magical about the Edenpure heaters. If 1500 watts goes in, that's what heat you get. Same as a $15.00 heater from Walmart. No one has invented anything that can multiply energy.

My moms heats her house by simply turning it on James, so idk what to tell you. She did buy the biggest model, if that helps any. I just know they worked great for her, being in an old, very leaky house and still saved money compared to the year before.

did you get the one that only does 300 sq ft? There is a bigger model that does 1000... we are thinking about getting one and not having to buy as much fuel oil! Can you make payments come off your card like most things you order?

That's true. I am sure they are a decent product, just WAY overpriced! If you shop around you can find the same technology for hundreds of dollars cheaper.

I think that any quartz/infared technology heater is safer than a space heater with a red-hot glowing element.
Point is that ya' don't have to spend hundreds of bucks ... comparable heaters are in the 60 dollar range.
I think that's what Mtnbkr was illuminating.

I have one and love it. It does the job and and my electric bill was not any higher. It is much better than the little electric heaters and a lot safer.
By the way, not trying to sell them-and I did not buy it from Lowes.
