DRIVERLESS CARS. Wold you get into

So whats the point if a driver has to have hands on the wheel?

I see legal land mines here.

If the car needed to swerve to avoid hitting somethng and the driver wanted to go left but the system wanted to go right.....who would be liable for any damages caused by this action?

Once again, the media has misled you with 10 second sound bites. Tesla has never released an autonomous car. They did create a driver assistance safety feature that does have the ability to pretty much drive the car by itself. But it was never meant to have the driver of the vehicle give up complete control, even though they made the mistake of naming the system autopilot. I would have to go back and look at this story again, but didn't the driver either climb into the back seat to ride, or kick back and go to sleep? Tesla has sense corrected their firmware to requires driver to keep their hands on the stearing wheel. If the car doesn't detect minor wheel movements from someone's hands, it shuts down the car.

While some states have legalized full autonomous cars to be on the road, no where in the US is it legal to do so without a licensed, sober, awake driver behind the wheel.

4 states have already approved them. Nevada, Florida, California, Michigan. 9 states have bills pending.

This is such an important issue so why is there no public discourse?

I remember reading about that, wasn;t the guy decapitated? Still, it's not enough to stop the transition. It's going to happen.

Against a bright spring sky, the car's sensors system failed to distinguish a large white 18-wheel truck and trailer crossing the highway, Tesla said. The car attempted to drive full speed under the trailer, "with the bottom of the trailer impacting the windshield of the Model S", Tesla said in a blogpost.

If you put alcohol in the radiator could the car be charged with a dwi?

I have no opinion yet because I haven't seen any solid evidence supporting either theory regarding automated cars. However, I have seen data on the improvents that current auto pilot/safety technology and how it's made driving safer. And I've also looked at info on how the biggest threat on the road is the human driver being tired, distracted, etc.

As I said before, we have the greatest safety check program in the world. No way automated cars will be put on the highways without being fully proven first.

Those are weighty words but do little to prove your position which I assume is favoring driverless cars. Also, an individual car dependant on the actions of one driver in no way compares to a massive grid of interrelating systems that could malfunction affecting hundreds, thousands, etc.

Better to spend the time, brains and energy on improving the car.

Not all of us want the Borg.

As for hacking, you better worry more about the cars already on the road. With automated vehicles, manufacturers will be much more concerned about security

Those are reasons to ban all cars already on the road. While your fears seem logical to you, they are actually unsupported and uninformed about how this technology works.

@Basking I wanted to respond but had trouble posting yesterday
which only serves to validate my concern and rejection of driverless cars as
safe. The following is enough to scrap the idea.

1. Weather too often interferes with transmission of signals etc.
2. Driver/passenger apathy while not fully engaged.
3. Multiple systems needed to operate one car.
4. Hacking
5. Unknown variables on street level that require immediate response.

I would like one of those George Jetson cars 🚗.

The guy died in the tesla due to his own fault.

What none of you against this have considered, we have the best quality safety check system in the world. If these are put on the road, they will be much safer than some methed up trucker that's been forging his logs for days.
