I hope basking hangs and bandit take a ride in one of those cars lmao

I wish the park assist was required on all cars now. When you have limited parking and some person who is not familiar with parallel parking and takes 2 spaces then gets out of their car and walk away ......

Micky, you dont have to get offended at the facts. Thats just how it is. Computers can process information and make a reaction much quicker than we can. Your logic is like how when cars came out and people wanted to ban them because illegal contraband could be smuggled in the trunks. Well, people were already smuggling illegal contraband in wagons. We have millions of people die on the highways every year. Actually, one interesting fact, the number of vehicular deaths is now on par with accidental gun deaths. smart car technology has already proven to make travel safer for people. Stop being afraid of something just because it is new.

I don't believe the laws of the road would change. You still wouldn't be allowed to speed or shoot through a red light and the driver would be the responsible party.

"humans are dumb and slow"....I smell a technocrat.

Anyway, the legal ramifications still have not been addressed. With so many "entities" involved in the operation, how would it be possible to determine the responsibility and fault in an accident? Currently a driver and a manufacturer are generally the culpable parties.

But wait...we're too stupid to decide such matters. Better let a computer figure it out.

Actually, those driver assist features work better towards your safety IN traffic. I drive from Burlington to Winston and don't touch the brake or gas until I get to my exit.

I can't imagine going back to when I had to turn the lights on manually in my home

Could you imagine going back to a time where you had to actually remember to turn your headlights off and on? Most cars now you just set-it to automatic and you don't have to think twice.

Humans are dumb and slow. I always laugh when some gearhead starts rambling about how having an automatic transmission isn't real driving, and claiming that in a straight drive, they can out drive anyone in an automatic. But engineers have developed computerized transmissions that shift perfectly, and faster and more efficient that any human can do. There's a reason formula 1 has moved to automatics.

Cruise control got a few stupid people killed too when it first came out

Planes have autopilot, why not something similar for cars.

Now I agree in heavy traffic maybe it should not engage, but driving to Orlando and that long stretch where NOTHING changes it would be nice.

As long as I am behind the wheel with the ability to override, I'd have no problem with it. I'll bet we will end up with more people dying from Toyota's throttle failures than from accidents caused by autonomous vehicles

Basking you try it first lmao

You've ignorantly written off the entire idea without actually finding out if it works or not, just because your $300 laptop has to be rebooted some times. And again, you still have missed the part that no car will be allowed without a human driver behind the wheel.

If you are talking about technical improvements in the automobile, I have no arguments. However when it comes to relinquishing the driving to GPS, and computerized sensors, I object. It doesn't require a technical degree to have an opinion on the matter.

And what qualifications do you have to make such statements? I've asked before what qualifies you to make such broad statements about the technology, but you've avoided the question. My assumption is, you've done so because you actually have no real understanding of the technology.

Btw, you quickly dropped the hacking issue when I debunked you there.

What you fail to get is that, this tech is already working. It's already been on the road in development vehicles. All luxury manufacturers have implemented the technology in some forms. And in the only fatality that you've come up with, you failed to actually find out what happened or how it happened.

@Basking...on my 8:10pm post I questioned the legal implications of incorporating too much AI with human driving.

There's no way this can work with individual cars. Mass transit is where it belongs with trained attendants.

Why they are pushing this is questionable.

Btw, other manufacturers are using similar systems like Tesla. Systems that help keep a driver in the correct lane, self braking to avoid obstacles and other cars, and variable speed control. Tesla's so far is just the most advanced on the market right now.

I'm not sure what is so hard for you to get. The Tesla Autopilot feature was not meant to be a full self driving car. It is meant to increase safety and reduce accidents, which it has done. Tesla's current system is not a self driving car, and it has never been promoted as being so.

The first known death caused by a self-driving car was disclosed by Tesla Motors on Thursday, a development that is sure to cause consumers to second-guess the trust they put in the booming autonomous vehicle industry.

The 7 May accident occurred in Williston, Florida, after the driver, Joshua Brown, 40, of Ohio put his Model S into Tesla's autopilot mode, which is able to control the car during highway driving.

The car was on autopilot when it smashed into the truck.
