You have to maintain a minimum speed on hiway 421. 40 mph.

With all the scooters in Wilkes, its worth remembering, that its illegal to pass them on a double yellow line. Some Barneys love to give tickets for this

Are there any restrictions on the hiways that a moped can travel?

Geniusman- I really sort of feel like you do. I have to spend alot of money keeping up a vehicle, paying the tax on it, spending money on it to be sure it passes a federally mandated inspection, keeping up an insurance policy, paying for an annual license, and I must drive sober and safe, I have no problem with people that want to drive them just for the economics of it. The problem I see is those that drive them just because they can't stay sober and drive. I think that if you lose your drivers license due to impaired driving you shouldn't be allowed to drive period. It is a sad situation when someone loses there license because they can't stay sober. Im glad this state is tough on drunk drivers. I feel they need to be tougher. I know a man that would give anyone the shirt off his back. He is a good and kind man. He just can't seem to stay out of a vehicle when he drink's. The company he works for has gone to bat for him and he is allowed to drive only to work and back home. Otherwise his family would hurt due to his addiction to alcohol. He doesn't drive one but I don't think even he should be allowed to drive a moped.

What about people that are half blind and can't pass the eye test to get their driver's license renewed. The government sees them as a danger and will not give them a license. BUT they can still drive a moped on the public highway around all of us that have to follow the rules to be able to drive. Why / How is that ? Does that make sense ? Be honest, don't consider people's feelings just be honest with yourself, does that sound FAIR to those of us following the rules ?

I feel that for ANY vehicle to be allowed on the road they should be required to have a license plate AND the driver have to have a driver's license PERIOD, or not be on the road at all on ANY thing. A drunk driver that has lost his license can still cause an accident and loss of life and property by driving a moped on the public highway. So you don't really punish anybody these days by taking their license. Oh well I'll just get in everybody's way and go slow but still get there, you're not hurting me in anyway. Just like I have seen some drive their lawn mowers on the public highway to the store down the road. They should be taken to jail, that's what gas cans are for. It would cause people to think before they drink and drive, this fun time may cause me to have to stay at home the rest of my life with no way to take myself anywhere EVER. But the least they see now is I'll just have to drive a moped to where I want to go, no stopping me.

I bet that if he ever got to Fancy Gap he could have a neat ride coming back down to Wilkes. Some times those guys make me mad with their pokey driving. Of course it's better than the bicycle hippys. They look to me like a big ole Praying Mantis going down the road with their spandex and pointy helmets. I don't mind them using the road but they need to get out of the way and not impede my travel. It hurts my motor to go so slow. I think the mopeds are supposed to pedal every once in awhile. How do you spell it ? Moped or mo-peds. I think it should be Mo-Peds, like pedal more often. Maybe the guys are just lazy and have no reason to travel to Boone. I left up there in 75 and have never found a reason to return

Have just now thought about it. It never occurred to me before. I don't remember ever seeing even one moped going up the 421 mountain to Boone from Wilkesboro ? As slow as they go, could they even be able to climb that mountain or would the driver have to get off and push it up the mountain ? Kind of serious and kind of comical thought going on right here now.
