Jsmom, I am not sure, but the last man hung in Wilkes County, a Mr. James Byers, is buried somewhere in that vicinity. I thought it was the Sprinkle cemetery, but I am not sure. It has been quite a while now!

No, it is not the Spinkle Cemetery. The one being referred to is half way down street on private property.

Jsmom is correct. Of the 8 different totally unrelated familys that have came and gone ...doesn't it seem to be a lot of "tragedies " for such a small area?

Jsmom, Would you know if the cemetery you are referring to could be the old Sprinkle cemetery which dates backs into the eighteen hundreds?

Church Street happens to be a good neighborhood. Many good people that live there.

While I believe in this sort of thing I want to throw out a thought here, As with any bad neighborhood, the type of people tend to be involved in the the sort of things that would cause them to be shot in a drug deal, or hang themselves in jail, or beat their kid to death. Not saying anything about the people living there, but trouble tends to follow trouble. Maybe this is just a bad neighborhood and the people that live there, do, because of poor economical, social and personal choices?

The unmarked graves were marked so that the land owner could fill in with dirt. Most had holes and need to be filled.

LearnToFly (view profile) Posted 12:20 am, 02/05/2015 It's my understanding Wilkes was a union county. There weren't any slaves. Correct me of I'm wrong.
There are slaves buried, in the yard, to the right, at the home beside what was Clegg's Market and is now the auction gallery. Writing on the wall of the a slave quarter behind the house indicate a voodoo curse was placed on the slave owners, at the time, because they sold some of their children. Many bad events befell the family, including, I believe, one of their children being killed in a carriage accident in the yard.

A few years back the landowner marked all the graves with wooden stakes with red ribbons tied on them. Within two weeks all the stakes had disappeared.

There is a place in the area you are speaking of that does in fact have many unmarked graves, I have seen them.

And all this happened on a strip of land about 300 yards wide and a half mile long.
