at the beginning of the week i told you about turkey breasts on sale. as i sit here this morning, drinking my coffee, and putting together my errand list ... i checked the ads for Lowes again
russet potatoes, 5 lb bags, bogo ... a savings of almost $4 cabbage, .59/pound
if you had picked up those turkey breasts at half price, this week you could also have potatoes and enough cabbage to make some cole slaw
and yes potatoes and cabbage can last until thanksgiving if stored properly. but don't be afraid to use some of them for potato soup

Pinterest rocks. I found the cutest little mason jar crafts on there. One I'm going to try asap. It's a mason jar soap dispenser. http://media-cache-ec0.pini...d8ff96.jpg
I'm gonna put a little fabric cover over the jar lid though.

And remember also, if your kids are dreaming of big expensive toys, you should have started saving earlier. Kids love practical gifts as well, visit a few yard sales and you'll see a lot of the must haves from last year for sale, barely used.

felt is really inexpensive. it requires no sewing. will not fray and is washable.
its an easy fabric to make a blanket for a toddlers bed. just make some cuts along the edge. tie them in knots or leave as fringe. easy peazy its done

Recipes are a great idea. I would say give a set of basic spices, but goodness knows, those are SO expensive nowadays. I bought a jar of cinnamon sticks last week....10 sticks.....nearly $6.
I know of a lot of people who really enjoy crafting but who can no longer get out to get the materials they need. Maybe ask those you know what they could use and buy it for them?

college students or new apartment dwellers, give them recipes
not a cookbook but take some index cards and write down or printo out some easy good tasting family recipes. use a hole punch on the corner of each card. slip a ring thru the holes and now they can just hang them on a cupboard knob.
i have one of these. its called 4/5 ingredient recipes.
i love church recipe books too. i have some that are older than dirt

Magazine subscriptions. Magazine companies are practically GIVING AWAY subscriptions these days, as so much is on line now. You can get someone a year's subscription to practically anything for less than $15, I believe.

A friend of mine "frosts" or paints Mason jars and puts dried flowers or brightly colored candies in them and gives them as gifts.
Another more "practical" idea for someone who journals or does crossword puzzles....get a fun coffee mug and fill it with pens, pencils, markers. I have a "Hot in Cleveland" mug beside me right now, filled with pens and pencils. I never have to go hunting for something with which to write.

yes blimey, and you reminded me of another idea
a flower pot, packet of seeds (heritage not hybrid), inexpensive garden gloves, and small tools if affordable
and another for kids, i did this one year and plan to do it again for another grandchild this year
buy some magnetic sheets from a craft store, print out some words (proper names, verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc), glue to the magnetic sheets and cut them out. put in a small box and let the kids use them to make sentences on a refrigerator door. this is cheap cheap cheap and kids love it. they can make great sentences. i even threw in some funny words so they would have a good time with it ... like fart, poop, etc

This year, I stocked up on jams and jellies made locally. I don't know of anyone who doesn't appreciate a good homemade jam.
I also give soaps and lotions made by Wilkes County's own Harmony Acres.
Another gift idea for the ladies....essential oils for the bath.
And you can never go wrong with a gift card for Lowe's.
