Chat Room

Just for clarification, I've had a few people ask me if we're going to start charging for the chat room.

The answer is NO. Someone else suggested it, and I explained why we don't plan to do that.

Always says it's full

The limit right now is 5 users, I was hoping to beta test for longer before paying to upgrade. Based on the number of messages I've gotten, though, I'm trying to upgrade it now to 15 concurrent users.

I'm waiting for the leasing company to reply, so it may be tomorrow before I can have it upgraded.

You are making unfounded insinuations.

Incoherent lmao Chicago, I’m not spending all day talking about your precious chat room. Jason done gave his reasons. I still believe when it comes to kids there should be measures in place to protect them from those sickos that lurk in chat rooms. Enjoy your chat room though.

Incoherent, please try again.

Idk Chicago but apparently didn’t even know the chat room even was available. It still wouldn’t take long there is sickos out there no matter what and chat rooms make it easier.

Heck if it’s costing you why not charge ?

Same thing I explained before... I try to look at the big picture, and hope that the chat users continue looking at other pages, too. It doesn't make money by itself, but I hope that it indirectly helps.

It's super frustrating that I don't have a way of knowing, though!

Idk I checked it out and quickly seen what Fins was talking about ... I did notice that there really wasn’t a way to verify the age so it would worry me about teens getting in there, especially with the conversation that’s I seen going on. There needs to be a better way to keep the male pedephiles out or make it harder for kids to get in.

There's really no way to verify anything like that. I could require a credit card, but kids could easily steal their parents' card. Or log in to their dad's account.

And by setting up verified parameters, I take on a legal responsibility that the user is of legal age. If a teenager uses a fake card, chats with someone, and then meets up with them, I could be held accountable for the implication that it was safe. By leaving it to the user, I'm absolved of that responsibility because there's no implication that anyone has been verified.

Besides, I can't imagine that more than 1% would pay for access. For example, I outlined earlier how much it costs to run GoWilkes, but how many users do you think would pay for access?

So charging really isn't practical, I'd rather find a way to monetize it instead. I might just post lead-ins to other features of the site (like "News" or "New Classifieds") and encourage the chatters to browse around.

Right now it can't have more than 5 people, so that's all I see. It's been consistently full just about all day, but I have no way of knowing whether they're all logging in and chatting, or if they're logging in to private chat with a specific person, or if they're just logging in and lurking.

The tough part about following modern trends is that teens and children often skew the results for larger studies. Our key demographic has always been 25-50, so I have to tread that fine line between offering modern features while still offering features that are a few years old. I mean, we have a significant amount of traffic using Windows XP, and even a small amount using Windows 98! There's even a very small amount using Windows 95, but I don't think they would be able to use much of the site because I didn't make it THAT backwards compatible. We also have a significant number of users on dial-up, so load time is still critical.

I don’t think I would call 50 very active. Like farmer, I thought chatroooms have been gone for a few years. If you can now see the statistics, I’d be curious to what you find. If you google “chat rooms” the results are all things that no one has ever heard of. No more yahoo. Chris Hansen kind of gave chat rooms a bad reputation.

For the record, I’m not h*mophobic. I don’t care what you do. But I do find it kind of funny when married guys are sneaking around trying to get on the down low.

If I could find a way to monetize the chat room, I'd set up multiple rooms so that there could be one for "Adult" stuff, and another for general chat... so you chat room folks, help me think of a way to make enough money to at least offset the expense, and I'll do it

really don't like the format just yet

What don't you like? I have several formatting changes I can make, I just tried to make it close enough to the old one that it wouldn't be that much of a shock.

Why are you still offering a chat room if there’s no monetary return to it? Is it your effort to help the community by helping keep the restarea clean?

Melissa asked me that same thing! Especially if 15 concurrent users isn't enough and I have to bump it up to 50 (the next step up).

But I'm trying to think big picture. I think of it the same as the Guns classifieds and Personals: I can't put ads on there, either, but people visit the site for those sections and view other pages (homepage, Private Messages, maybe browse around the other categories, etc).

Further, it helps keep people talking about GoWilkes that might have otherwise moved on to another site.

It's next to impossible to determine it's actual value, though, so I don't want to pay a huge amount each month if the return is minimal.

----

Chat rooms I thought was obsolete, who knew people actually still goes in those things.

I honestly had no idea, either, because the old program had no traffic reports. But I've had over 50 messages today from people that actively use it, so I guess it's a lot more popular than I thought!

I logged in for a sec last night when Jason posted it was working again. It was pretty obvious very quick that it was like a virtual San Francisco bath house.

I don’t disagree Fins it appears a few of the posters according to their profile states they are looking just for that and one started a thread this morning wanting to give massages naked.
