The county don't have to put any money into the schools, that is the states responsibility. In fact, we shouldn't put money into the schools. If it was left to me I would pull it all out.

No, I understand exactly what they can and can't do. Chalma doesn't, though... obviously.

The county doesn't have the legal right to withhold funds to the school board like you're suggesting. If she thinks that should change... well, again, that's a state issue.

Chalma is simply running for the wrong office.

Believe me, I would LOVE to support a woman to be on the board! But Chalma could have at least googled what the job does. I mean, it took 2 minutes to find and read the article that specifically states that she can't do 2 of the 3 things she's campaigning on.

I'm extremely curious now to know Foxy's successful career choice, since she besmirched several different jobs on here.

Bet she won't tell us.

Wilkes was once the cream of the state. It lost it's power because it is republican in a democrat state. The state cut off funds to expanding 421 and built Hwy 40 because Wilkes was a republican strong hole. If Wilkes prospers in the future, it will have to align itself with the powers in the state. That means we need different kind of people running our county. People who will stand up to the good old boys and put them in their place.

Maybe you just don't understand what a county commissioner is. Nothing will ever get fixed if the commissioners just accepts it when people say you can't do that. If we need it, then find a way and do it. People are a lot more willing to work with you if you can take their money away.

They don't have that legal option:

Very simple, if the school board don't spend the county money the way we want, they don't get it. Why pour money down a rabbit hole?

Who says the money has to go to wages to improve our schools? Who even says we spend more money on schools? Perhaps we could just spend the money we already do in a more efficient way?

This is just one of the (poorly informed) ideas from Chalma Hunt's website:

It's time to build and fund a first-class public education system in Wilkes. It is the single-largest employer, so we need to support our teachers to the fullest.

If "it is the single largest employer... we need to support our teachers" doesn't mean a financial support, what do you think she means?

As others have pointed out before, though, the county commissioners do not have the legal ability to control how the school budget is spent. They decide how much of the county budget to give the school board, sure... but then it's up to the school board and superintendent to decide how to spend it.

IMHO, all three of her suggestions are state issues and have nothing to do with the county commissioners. She wants a raise for teachers, it should come from the state budget. She wants the Medicaid expansion, that's definitely from the state's General Assembly. She wants better infrastructure, that's definitely from the state DOT.

I'm not saying they're bad ideas, she just doesn't understand what a county commissioner does.

I would think that if I were filing to run for an office, I would google "what does a county commissioner in NC do?" The very first result:

Have you ever been right about anything?

Springy, I would say you have never had a job above the poverty level. Am I right?

WOW! you are an idot. I really doubt you are a success fox. If you are not making over $100K a year, you are a loser like the rest of us.

So why have you avoided college?

If you want a living wage, do a living job. If you can't live on what you make, change your lifestyle or work you way up to the next level. It is America folks

Like all good little leftist schlitZ, scum bag swucy feels it is the responsibility of government to insure all workers get paid a "living wage".

Not sure being a teacher measures up to trash collecting. But.... in a way they are similar.

Bestill

I reckon teachers should be paid more than trash collectors. No shame to trash collectors. That is an honorable profession and we should pay our trash collectors a living wage.

Just another tax and spend liberal, keep her out of government. There is never enough money to satisfy teachers. Throwing 5 million more dollars will not help the problem. Public education, (government schools) is not the answer, vouchers for private education would help.

Let's pretend that this was even a legal option.

The most recent information I could find was 2011, but at the time we had 639 teachers in Wilkes. As of 2017, the average salary was $40,169 ($3,347 a month).

Let's assume that the plan is for the county to give them a 10% raise... that's $4,017 a year. For 639 teachers, that comes to $2,566,863.

If you want to give ALL of the school employees a 10% raise, there are 911 of those. So that comes to about $3.7 million.

But we're actually 14% below the national average, so a 14% raise would cost $3.6 million for teachers or $5.1 million for all school employees.

Now... does Chalma Hunt want to increase local taxes to raise that $2.5 - 5.1 million? If not, what does she propose cutting from the budget to find it?
