Very true.. last year showed it in spades by Morrison can't do everything by himself he's gotta have some help. Their defense badly let them down in the 2 games they shoulda won especially the North Iredell game. That forfeit was ic as well should have never happened.

One big thing they gotta overcome is it's the first full year these two classes have played fully together. Turner cut the JV teams to the bone both years these classes were freshman as he moved up their best kids both years and left them to fend. One year they were good on JV the other they were awful. They gotta figure out how to play together. But in looking at the roster they will be very experienced and they should be a lot better. Defense will be the key.

WC is always athletic. It's their defense and lines that hold them back. Central is going to need more than Joraye to win conference. Other than him, who are the offensive threats?

Wilkes Central or Ashe will win the conference. Both teams will score frequently.

Starmount or Elkin 3rd and 4th.
Wilkes Central is very athletic which most teams will not match up with. Joraye Morrison is a great running back that will lead the charge in the back field but Josh Pack is probably the most important player on team. Offensively and especially defensively he will make them very solid.
Rest of the league is a toss up. Maybe Alleghany solid 5th

One has to wonder if Elkin's coaching staff is part of their issue.

My early Prediction:

1A. Ashe (Junior class is solid.. other classes not so much yet. Defense has to stay solid in order to win as that was what made their team last year so surprisingly good.)

1B. Starmount (Lot's of returning seniors as well as solid JV kids coming up. If they win 2-3 games in non conference I see them maybe running away with it all as their first two games are really hard teams to beat. Their #'s aren't great on the whole and D will be younger but they have the talent and coaching to be good. Getting Grinton was the best possible thing as he's breathed new life back into that program.)

3. WC (Most athletic team in the conference, they gotta become more physical. Last year's team were outhit and lost 2 close games to NI and Elkin when they shouldn't have. One major + is it's the first time the two older classes have played together fully as some kids were called up early. Morrison's the real deal but he needs help all around him.)

4. Elkin (Either will surprise near the top or bust twords the bottom, very hard to say right now until I see them play full on. Wood will have his hands full this year. The pass on both sides is a weakpoint, they gotta be able to run it until they can figure it out. Lineplay and depth is key.. if either one is down then it will be a rough year.)

5. North Wilkes (Could be the upset/X factor team. Tons of seniors but very little juniors.. could be the last year for a little bit where they compete with people. If D gets better and their O can find balance, they could be quite good. Non conference slate's much harder which will battle prep them.)

6. Alleghany (They will be very young on the line but solid in the skill spots, the JV linemen from last year have got to grow in a hurry as the non con slate's really tough. Will improve thru the year into conference. Still a year or so away from being really good in small 1A ball.)

7. East Wilkes (Upperclassmen are very low in #'s.. Freshman class may have to play big boy ball and skip JV. Not a good thing at all health wise for a program. East will be good again by 2021/22.)

8. West Wilkes (Entire program's a nuclear zone.. it's gonna take a while to rebuild. Not many killer athletes here, they will have to ball control people to play them. Might be lucky to win more than 1 this year. ? if the new HC's even the right pick for them or not.)

Seen both Ashe and Elkin at a 7 on 7 this summer.. Ashe looked really good, Elkin not as good as I expected. Granted it's a summer time thing but it provides an early look and the basis of how teams really are but both times were quite telling.

Ashe was pretty solid.. they won't be the fastest team in the air raid they have had in the skill spots, but they get to the ball really good on both sides of the ball. QB can really chunk it but he's not fully there yet in terms of accuracy but that will come, RB did alright but he's a way better runner. I was impressed by how well they can read an offense when they play D.. they are way better coached than in the past couple of years on that side. I don't see much if any MVAC team hanging with them if they stay 100% healthy, grow thru the year, and have a nice depth. 2020 they may be one of the best teams in the whole area if they stay focused.

Elkin meanwhile was disappointing. They didn't impress me in the least as much as I was expecting. Last year they were hyped up and were playing people hard in 7 on 7 games which is rare to see at that time of the year, but showed they were gonna be tough. This past time was a complete 180, they were very lackadaisical and had no emotions. They acted like they didn't want to be there and that's not a good sign. Defensive wise they have went down quite a bit.. they are quite young in the secondary and teams ate them up there. Offensively they didn't score that much. Forbush beat them by at least 2 TD's, RJR won by 2-3 TD's, then North and East Surry ran over them and scored 30+.. it wasn't pretty.

Looks like the pass will be a weakpoint again for the Elks. Until they can stop it it will be a rough go when they play pass friendly teams no matter what talent they got. Depth's also a key as the younger class will be smaller and smaller and less talented. I have a hard time saying how they will go.. I'm sure they will be okay in the 1A level but maybe not as good as I expected perhaps.

Ashe repeats. Too many weapons on offense and there is not one team in the MVAc that can match them on offense or stop them on defense. Elkin has great talent, this year will be a tell all for how far they have really developed under EHS's system.

If Ashe's young QB is as good as advertised and the o-line can protect him, nobody in the MVAC is touching them.
