I think your use of the term "religion" may be the biggest question for me in what you said.
As far as what was normal behavior in the time of Moses - I don't know. But if it happened, then it happened. I would not uphold either group doing what they did or continue to do.
This is the basis for what I believe. Why would there be a neccesity for additional morality?

While I agree with you, I have to mention that if not for religion, humans would've taken longer to develop the skills needed to live in a social environment. Just like Alchemy was our first attempt at Chemistry, and Astrology was our first attempt at Astronomy. Religion was humanity first attempt at morality and philosophy. Religion spoke its last intelligible words well before the invention of the microscope and telescope.
This is why the morality in the bible isn't actually morality, and provides no new or enlightening reflections on morality, and requires "revelations" to stay updated with the zeitgeist. This is also evident in the ex-alcoholics and drug abusers scapegoating their past transgressions on Jesus, to clear the rubble and build scaffolding to behave in society.
