To cure the rain rot on his back mix listerine and baby oil together and spray on the spots and that will heal that problem. As far as the horse not being able to stand and drink you have a serious problem and need to have the vet check it.

Please excuse my typos - I am sick with the flu and obviously not very adept at either spelling or getting the message to interpret paragraphs, etc. Sorry!!

Wish I had found this earlier - I hope the horse's issues have resolved themselves. If this are still the same, please call a vet! From what you have described it sounds as if something neurological is going on. In a young horse, especially one run through the Mt. Airy sale, you really have no way of knowing an honest, accurate "record" of the animals past routine medical care (ex. vaccinations, etc). The horse may not have been vaccinated against EPM. They can contract EPM by eating food or water that has been contaminated with the EPM virus. EPM is commonly carried by possums and other animals, but especially possums. EPM is DEADLY. IF (and that a BIG IF) you can catch it early on, there may be a chance of the animal surviving. If it is EPM and not treated it will stand a good chance of dying. What concerns me most is the loss of condition (weight) and the stumbling/falling episodes. I wish you all the best of luck. Keep me posted - you may PM me is you wish. I have owned, trained, and ridden horses for many years. I hope your horse will be better soon!!

Japanese Maples are the ones poisionous to horses, and they are very toxic!
Just curious does the horse appear to have any swollen lymph nodes? Any open sores under the jaw line?

Has he been around a Maple tree? I was told Maple trees are poisonous to horses. Can't say for sure what is wrong this happened to one of my dads horses this summer but now he is doing fine. Get him checked by the vet, asap. Dad had his checked and they thought it was maple because he had gotten it to the tree when he had gotten out.

Make sure you keep him away from the other horses...you may need to run a hose down his throat to get water in him. Get him to the vet ASAP.

Thanks for the response. He's not drinking a whole lot of water but is drinking some. I purchased him off someone that picked him up at Mt Airy sale about 2 weeks before

Just curious! Does your horse seem to strangle or choke when eating grain?
