I don't do business with Lowe's but do find a Home Depot. They have really have nice ones and at reasonable prices. Never had good luck with any plants from Lowe's when I used to buy from them. Maybe Wilkes area stores are better now.

My mom in law was a non smoker...when she was in the grasp of alzheimers, we had a caregiver come over who smoked. (Outside, of course.)

One afternoon, we were outside on the deck, and mom says. "Let me have one of those." She took that cig, and lit it up and smoked it for a few minutes...she knew exactly what she as doing. My ex was flabbergasted, as she had never seen her mother smoke...

Mom had secrets ;-)

Thanks guys and gals, well except Chendo. I spend alot of time with her, do all her lawn and as much of the home maintenance as I can. She loves flowers, so Orchids it is. Great idea. Thanks alot!!

If you guys like to do crafts, you could sign up for a painting class together. I think someone does them upstairs at the antique mall. If you're not into painting, you could walk around the mall so she can pick out her own gift, and she could reminisce about seeing things she grew up with as a child.

Another idea would be to make a photo scrap book together, most people have tons of old photos that are loose and not put into albums.

Either way you are spending precious time together and creating memories.

I like the orchid idea. Lowe's has beautiful ones. They do bloom for months, and are surprisingly easy to care for.

give something of yourself to her, something that she is running short on, your time and presence.

Material possessions mean little...but the one thing she will always have is the memory of the time you spent with her!

Happy Birthday!

Any crafty thing about family. Buy a cool photo album and put pics with remembrances. At her age, she will appreciate thought over bling.

With parents it's not the gift item that's important but the feeling that goes with it. It could be something as simple as a "love" letter telling her what she has meant to you all your life and how much you appreciate her. This along with a live plant is enough. I know this because I'm a parent who didn't tell my parents how much I loved them...I showed it, but didn't verbalize it.

Where in Wilkes do you get orchids? Thanks for the response.

If she were my mother I would buy a really beautiful orchids plant (potted). In addition, a large print book, with nice pic tyres, on orchids care and maintenance. Be prepared to work with her until she gets the hang of it. Orchids blooms can last up to 3 months depending on the species. Give her a big hug for all of us who have temporarily lost ours until heaven
