"One of the principle reasons for the county's industrial stability is the capable, industrious source of white American labor..." Not the best wording, but okay. If you say so.

It's amazing how industrious we were back then. It was definitely a different time. One thing to remember is that much of this industry was the rebound from the Great Depression. The Depression wasn't even over 20 years yet, and WWII had just ended 10 years prior to this video. Of course people were healthy and happy. This was probably the best shape our county was ever in. Starvation wasn't as big of an issue, people had jobs, and while folks didn't have a lot, they were happy with what they had.

I love that shot of the courthouse in downtown Wilkesboro. Love those trees covering the lawn.

Suncrest orchard was located on the West end of Suncrest Orchard road in Cricket.

Kenc, traffic count is a major factor in locating store such as you mentioned. I occasionally work with commercial real estate brokers and one of the first questions is what is the traffic count.

OC, I saw a young black boy in the department store scene but didnt see his mother. Also a black man in the shot of the funeral home workers.

That was an awesome video. It is sad that things aren't still like that. Did anyone else notice when they were showing the churches they said the Wilkes co. Settlers "brought their rifles and bibles but they have put away the former". That made me laugh.

Has anyone seen family members? I was thinking some of the kids might only be late 60's or 70's.

Thanks for sharing !

The Cobles dairy plant was in Wilkesboro. West end across fron Tyson. I think the Suncrest Orchard was on the Brushy Mountains.

Anyone know where the milk plant and Suncreast orchard were. I am surprise that the video didn't mention the train station since that would a been a major source of transportation back then.

One interesting observation was the fact that most of all the folks seemed to be in much better shape than we are today!! Not many fat people on the streets. It was not uncommon for folks to walk several miles a day then. My grandmother lived about thirty miles from us. It was a ten to twelve hour walk, but I made the walk several times.

Was observing that too, OC....but then i saw a woman of color loading a bus. I'm sure the lady went to the back tho. Very interesting time and enjoyable video but for sure evidence of the segregation.

Looks like the towns were better off then than now. Things were thriving then. Not now. Makes me sad.

A Walmart, Kmart, Target or any kind o mart at the end of main where American Drew used to be would revitalize the town. The powers that be wouldn't have anything like that,
