$500 a month would dramatically change my life. My hat’s off to those that it wouldn’t.

Marie, I'm not wealthy, it took me some years to learn to be wise with money. However I have become frugal over the years, and I'm debt free. Yes I started working for pay in 1969 and I'm still working some, but supposed to be retired.

Really, none of my business though, yet ya should be pretty wealthy Working 50 or so years.... Well maybe not..

There is no way $500 can get a person over the hump.18 months $9000 needs to be in a lump sum for it to be effective. My family in Alaska pisses and moans when the portion they get falls down to $1000 or less. They have used it just like getting a large amount back on income taxes and You All run to the Walmart and buy a big screen TV.

Sparklin, speak for yourself. I am very comfortable with what I earn, and I already save & donate, how about you?

I would save the $500 per month and be thankful for it.
However, instead of $500 being distributed "randomly," I think it should go to the most needy.

I would save 1/2 of it and give the other half to those in need.

It’s highly unlikely the Federal Government would ever give you money unconditionally. Just like Obamacare or any socialism program there is always some kind of added government control. Give up some rights get more free stuff.

Anti I'm a little confused here. First of all the link about the Alaska fund says it is from oil revenues and is given on an annual basis, not monthly.
Second, except for taxpayer money, what profits does the government have for all to share in?
Wouldn't I be better off just keeping my tax money?

I would use it to stockpile supplies because sooner or later the people giving you the money would run out.

It's actually based on a real life experiment.
Since 1982, Alaska has been giving each resident a Universal Basic Income, which varies based on current oil prices. That dividend has been up to $2,000 per person, and it has had great results:
Now, Stockton, California, is trying something similar by giving $500 a month to 150 randomly selected citizens, for the next 18 months:
This is an experiment that, if successful, could be promoted to the entire nation. It could be as a method of replacing welfare and food stamps by just giving cash to the poor, but it could also turn into something like Alaska's program where we would all get a cut of the government's profits.

Is this for everyone or just me? If it is for everyone, the retail prices would increase, thus negating any benefit of the $500. Plus the $500 would make me dependent on whoever is handing out the $500. So I would pass on it.
