This kind of lie really bugs me

For pay increases- I cannot type well on this silly phone.

The kind of lie that bugs me is that NC is #1 formula increases! (Sorry HIAM, the joke was just too easy to make!)

Yes, that is correct, however they just brought pay up to what it was before they had a freeze on pay raises. The GOP were the ones that continued the pay freeze, plus they enlarged the school choice voucher program.

The situation is pretty complicated. I would recommend that you read the article from the news and observer that Anti posted. It gives a decent overview so that you will have a more balanced point of view.

Since the Republicans took over, North Carolina has been number one in the country for pay increases for the teachers.

Too bad the media doesn't report the truth.

I will never break 55,000 either. I work 5 days a week. And will never see that kind of pay. But I do love my job. So I think I will keep it. :) it’s clean and puts a roof over my head. I can’t afford fancy. But I get by. Barely. I don’t have time for protesting. That’s for sure.

:) what do you do, 38?

Hope is right! My best friend from college has her Master's degree in Reading Education and she barely makes 40k a year. Of course she hasn't been working for 25+ years.

And this Batch worked her booty off in college and is in tons of student loan debt still!

I have so many women in my family that are/were teachers but when it came time for me to pick a profession, I picked a more specialized field because I know from family members that teachers are like Rodney Dangerfield ... They get no Respect!!

The absolutely worst stories I've heard are when a teacher tried to discipline a child (who obviously needed it) and the Mama shows up and tries to literally "spit" in teachers face or cuss her out.

Sorry I love teachers!!!! They are so important. But not worth it for me

Some of the biggest critics of teachers didn't attend college, much less graduate.

You are exactly right, Hope.I will never break 55k.

Not correct Kayla. If I'm looking at it right, a teacher would have to have a Master's degree, be board certified and have put in 20 years before they would break $60k a year. They could never make $65k.
Why would anyone choose a profession in which no matter how hard they work, with only a bachelor's degree (or even a master's without being board certified), there is no chance of ever making over $55k a year, even at 25 years? Say what you will about how the current teachers are whining about nothing, what are we going to do when they all leave teaching and we're not attracting anyone new to take their place? Homeschool?

Wait, teachers make $40 to $65000 a year? That's a lot more than I thought! They're making it sound like they make less than minimum wage!!

Looks like when people have nothing else to do they criticize teachers . Teachers often spend their own money to buy supplies for their students .

I've encountered some of the offspring teachers have to deal with and there's not enough tea in China to ever make me consider that profession lest I be arrested for jerking knots in little JohnnySusieBobbyAlices behinds

i'll tell you what kinda bugs me. there is a teacher bellyaching about her working conditions when she was teaching. snakes falling out of the ceiling, leaking pipes, whatever. but the thing is when i went to school there is was a fairly new school. i went back 5 years later and the school was riddled. the heaters were torn out of the walls in the bathrooms the fixtures were missing. if the conditions are so bad then make the kids take care of the school and make them behave and you won't have to work in such bad conditions. they had a brand new school. just didn't take care of it.

185 days a year (and that's if you worked most of your optional teacher work days) at 45,000 = $243.00 per day worked.

Most real world jobs if you make 45,000 you will work between 240 and 300 days a year. Plus more hours per day. Do the math teachers, you have it made.
If teaching is not giving you the pay you think you deserve, take your degree and go to work elsewhere.

Teachers that protest pay should get out into the real world and get a real job. Complaining about a range from 40,000 to 60,000 for 9 months worth of work is getting old. And yes, it is 9 months of work after you add fall break, Christmas break, Spring break, and Summer break. Not to mention you only work 5 days a week, have good benefits and retirement plan. So take your education and start a new career!! Work 50 to 60 hours a week with little to no vacation and have no home life. Then you'll get the money you deserve. A good teacher does it for the kids. It's a passion and a calling.

Teachers protesting pay makes me feel sorry for people like police officers and firefighters making half of what they make and work double the hours. They work nights, weekends, and holidays risking life and limb. Spend countless hours away from family and sacrifice their own lively hood. And all the other under paid jobs!!
Point being......EVERYONE WANTS MORE MONEY!!!! If you want to sacrifice your life and time, take your education and do something else that pays better!! If everyone thought like you, life would be just one big protest!
