Should DC be the 51st state?

For that matter, NC should really be split in two... the East is traditionally very Democratic while the West is traditionally Republican. It's really not fair for one side of the state to be governed by the other side...

So you're saying negate the two Texas Senate seats by breaking up the state?
Sections centered around Houston and Austin and other cities might be blue. Thanks for the idea.

maybe after Washington D C becomes a state. Texas is so big maybe they can make 4 new states out of it

The folks living in DC could be considered residents of Maryland for election purposes but do Marylanders want DC?
Right now they pay a 22% federal tax rate, an 8.5% "progressive district income tax," no local tax, and a 6% sales tax:
If they combined with Maryland then their federal and sales tax would be the same, but state income tax would drop to 4.75% and there would be an additional 3.2% local tax:
So the residents would save a small amount of money, Maryland would increase their tax revenue by more than 10%, and the residents would be given fair representation.
Seems like a pretty fair solution to me, all around...

You made me curious... there are 1,155 sex offenders in DC:
With a population of 692,683, that's 166.7 per 100,000 people.
The state with the highest number of sex offenders per capita is Oregon, with 688 per 100,000. The lowest is Maryland, with 125:
So statistically speaking, DC would be 45th in the list of 51 states.

In 1847 the land that Virginia donated to the Federal District was given back and is now Virginia again. The folks living in DC could be considered residents of Maryland for election purposes but do Marylanders want DC?

The founding fathers knew that the state that held the nation's capital would see benefits the other states wouldn't enjoy because of all the political influence.
I do think that DC residents who want to vote in congressional elections should be allowed to vote in a neighboring state of their choice.

Wasn't Washington built to be a centralized location for the States. How about Washington being separated from states being it's owned by the each State.

DC should not. Let the residents of DC vote for and be represented by the representyof the states from which DC was taken.

I think every citizen deserves a vote so divide it between Maryland and Virginia. It would have to be cheaper for them to annex it then to create a new state government.

What "idea" did I express, Dale? The idea that you might have your own thought?
Or are you referring to newbegining's idea, thinking that it's mine?
Why is there there a city ( mayor council Police department) on federal Land? That's a fair question, and my guess is because someone has to be in charge of day to day, and we can't expect the President or Congress to worry about creating local ordinances.
My opinion is Washington should be independent from being considered a State. How do you justify the citizens of DC paying taxes without representation? Same goes for Guam and Puerto Rico, too, as Bestill mentioned...
