People that don't understand dogs are animals shouldn't have one. These people that say "fur babies" and carry their dogs around like they are accessories should be horse whipped in public. I saw a case where a child had severe facial damage and I think lost a eye because the child was in the dog's face and the dog was never taught it's place

I fostered and trained a Pit last year. He was totally different than my other dogs.(Collies) He never was allowed to forget his place...NEVER got on the furniture...especially my bed. He slept on the floor at the foot of my bed. He was as content and happy as could be, knowing his place in the pack.

When he got adopted in June, the family has the same mentality, and even with kids in the house, he continues to thrive.

Sorry, but your boy got attacked because you let the dog be the alpha of the pack. Dogs are animals, not toys. And the genetics of the dog had nothing to do with what happened. It happened because you let the dog be in charge of the house. If you read anything from military dog handlers, as much as they bond with the animals, they never let the dogs on furniture, because for the dog that is a literal hierarchy. You let the dog jump on people and sit on furniture like everything belonged to him

Thanks everyone for the good advice. It's not that I can't afford a dog I just want to know more about the dog before I commit. The last dog we got at the shelter my boys picked out. He was a puppy and a mixed breed. He was 5 weeks old when we got him and was a great dog. Smart easy to train, very loving and just a great companion. Then after 2 years he turned and was very aggressive and attacked both of my children leading to Hospital visit. One was very serious. Please don't think he had been abused because he was nothing short of being a 105lb lap dog. His worse habit was jumping on you when we were playing. Because of the seriousness of the attack he had to be put down. We spent 8 hours with a Plastic Surgeon getting my child's face sewn back on. Both times these attacks came out of no where. He was asleep one time and the other time my child went to pet him. This is why I am afraid to get another pet from the shelter. We miss having a great companion to shape ourselves with.

There is a difference between being a "dog lover" and being a dog person. Being a "dog lover" is easy. A real dog person doesn't anthropomorphize their animals.

My best dogs were the ones that picked me.

Give me a Sooner Dog or Mutley any day of the week. I have had full bred dogs with papers and as another poster said they don't live as long and they are inner bred which causes problems of there on. I have the most human dog you can imagine, she understands English. When I was dating my husband he didn't believe me now that we have been together he is a believer and it blows his mind. My advice is go to the animal shelter and let the dog pick you. You will know when it happens. 80.00 isn't that much when it covers shots, worming and spay or neutering. Plus you are saving a life that may save yours as mine did for me but that's another story.

Rescued dogs seem to be more appreciative of their new homes and new owners.

There are a number of shelters in the area. I would definitely look there before going to a breeder.

Good breeders never sell a high dollar dog without spay or neuter contracts. Check the breeder. This is not to say that boogie dogs are not the best dogs, because the mostl are.jst get their health in order and love, love, love

I used to breed dogs and you just have to be aware. A great puppy from the shelter gives great life long love.
Depends on what you want.

If you struggle for the money to purchase one (even from the shelter) then you can't afford a dog. No dog is ever "free". It costs money to have a dog. Food, shelter, vet care, toys....none of that is free. You have to be prepared to spend money for many years. I'm so tired of seeing dogs tied up in the heat or freezing cold with only a little Ole Roy tossed at them once a day.

I just checked the classified ads. There are currently several dog ads that are free and below $100.

I see lots of free ads posted and small rehoming fees of $20 or less. Those seem to go quickly because the ads are not usually there too long.

I have looked in the classifieds many, many times and there are never any $20 dogs. Sometimes people will have them to regime and even those can be pricy. Even going to the shelter is around $80 and you definitely don't know what kind of breed you are getting. I'm just saying that $500-800 is a lot for a dog. I have looked at some of the rescue shelters and even those can be $500-2500 plus I would have to travel some distance. Hopefully, the right puppy will come along.
