Good advice from this guy....

I don’t have to tell you the mainstream media says a lot of dumb stuff. Take everything you read and hear with a grain of salt. (Which really isn’t that bad for you, despite what the media might say…)

You probably know the drill by now. Drugs are approved as safe and effective by the FDA before they hit the market. But supplements are the Wild West, with no regulations at all.

I have to tell you, it’s complete garbage nonsense on both counts. Supplements are heavily regulated. But even if they weren’t, I wouldn’t recommend anything that didn’t pass the safety tests and standards that mean it helps you get and stay healthy. Whether that’s a supplement pill or a bowl of quinoa. (Delicious, by the way.)

There are a lot of hoops to jump through to get a supplement right. And I’m not arguing with that fact… it just fries me when I hear some yahoo on TV talk about how supplements aren’t regulated.

But what really gets me going is when people act like all drugs are some sort of miracle, like our bodies somehow “evolved” into having pharmaceutical deficiencies, and the only way we can stay alive is by pumping ourselves full of chemicals cooked up in a lab.

You know in your gut that’s bunk. But now the Journal of the American Medical Association released a study of all the new drugs cleared by the FDA between 2001 and 2010. Guess what? More than 3 out of 10 had major safety risks AFTER they hit the market.

Look, I sympathize with people, especially those fighting terrible diseases, where a new drug is possibly their only hope. There should be exceptions for those cases. But we somehow got the idea that drugs should hit the market faster, even though many new drugs aren’t better than the ones they’re replacing, and now we know they’re not safer either.

And when the FDA gets most of its funding from Big Pharma to begin with, the entire process is a joke. Not only do they pay the salaries of the people approving the drugs, the drug companies do most of the research themselves too.

Meanwhile, here’s something else you probably didn’t know. If there’s a problem with a supplement, supplement companies are required to report it. When a drug hurts someone, there’s no law that makes doctors and hospitals tell ANYONE.

So, we don’t even know just how many people are being hurt by drugs that are “safe.”

It comes down to this. Trusting the government to protect your health is a fool’s errand. Keep reading, learning and making choices for yourself. It’s the only way to stay truly healthy.
