I lock exterior doors, and do not store firearms in the bathroom. Burglary is a crime, a felony in NC.

Ah, another false comparison. Good try though.
As a gun owner you have a legal responsibility to store your weapon in a safe manner.
For instance, if in a car it should be secured in the truck or LOCKED in the glove box.

That's an interesting point, Cowboy. But literacy is different from competency, I think.
The literacy test given to vote was intentionally designed to make black voters fail, since many of them had no ability to receive an education. You might find this interesting:
But a competency test similar to the test given when you get a driver's license doesn't seem so extreme to me. Just show that you are not mentally unstable, you know how and when to use the firearm, and you know how to protect it and maintain it. And, of course, close the Flea Market Loopholes, requiring a license to buy or own any gun.
The question would be, what if one spouse can pass the test but the other can't? There would still be a gun in the home of someone that's potentially not mentally competent. Or worse, a parent passes the test just fine, but a mentally unstable teen in the home still has access to the gun. So a simple test would only go so far, it would eventually have to extend to requiring every person in the household to pass the test... which means that parents of small children would not be able to own a gun until the child is old enough to take the test.
So that's where it gets complicated, and I'd have to research how other countries handle that one to see if there's an easy solution.

We should never make people pass a test in order to exercise a right, remember "poll test", the tests Democrats used to prevent blacks from voting. I'd pass it just fine. I don't sell guns, I collect them.

How about forced sterilization that would curb the population growth.
As I said before, I don't think we're too far from that. We have 7.53 billion people on earth, and countless studies have shown that we can only support 10 billion. At the current rate of growth, we're expected to hit 10 billion in 2050.
At that point we'll have more people than we have air or food, so something HAS to be done by then.
I think you should move to Japan since it's so much better than the US.
How very unAmerican of you! The Founding Fathers demanded that we continue to make the US better with every generation. Seeing a problem and working to make it better is our responsibility; telling people to leave instead of trying to make it better is both cowardly and as unAmerican as you can get.
What I see is a place where another country has done better than us, so logic dictates that we emulate them and make the US better. Do you deny that a homicide rate that's 16% of that in the US is better?
Be honest here, what you're real problem with the concept of requiring a basic competency test for gun ownership? It's well within the government's right to implement it, so that's not the concern. Is it that you don't think you would pass it? Or do you sell guns, and you're afraid that such a test would limit your ability to sale?
