Anyone who would think that bumper sticker is racist has a problem and is just looking for something to be offended about

I've heard this and know all about this since I was a little girl. All my cousins would get their dogs together and go coon hunting. It's crazy to think of it as anything else. So the people that think these things are the racist. You said it I didn't. Everyone quit reading into everything and let it be for god sake.

Who woulda thunk it? The American Kennel Club is "racist."

I think we are living in the United States of the Offended. That term was probably more racist 50 years ago than now. I have not heard that term used in a racist context in years. The game now seems to be lets find somethng racist in every nook and cranny.

I think you are suggesting that people modify otherwise innocent speech in consideration of the possibility of offense.

That's noble for folk who want to do it.
But it's not obligatory.

ODD, would you buy a bumper sticker today that referred to "coon hunting," and be completely oblivious to the racist double meaning?

I'm not implying at all that you were racist by being a coon hunter, and I'm sure that your friends knew that when you referring to "coon hunting" that you fully meant that you were hunting racoons. But that was 60 years ago, and times have changed. Further, a bumper sticker doesn't convey context like a conversation would. So it would be extremely naive to think that the owner had no idea that it could be taken offensively.

I think it would be like having a bumper sticker that says "KKK," then pretending that you have no idea that it means anything other than "Kit Kat Klub."

I think you are stretched pretty thin on this one anti. Sixty years ago I was a coon hunter. I hunted with several black guys as well as white hunters. It was a man and dog thing and it was coon hunting to all of us. I was offered six hundred dollars for my dog in the early fifties which I declined. I lost the dog a couple of weeks later when he went into the river after a coon. Not many coon hunters left, so I can understand someone making a statement about old habits dying hard or even placing a sticker on his bumper stating so. But here again, I have no idea what message they were attempting to convey. I 'm old and tired, so I am going to bed!

I know that, Affy. But you know as well as I do that it's also a common racial slur, dating back to well over 100 years ago:

I can't imagine the guy buying the bumper sticker didn't know that when he bought it.

Because that's how coon hunters have always said it.

I haven't made a statement, I asked a question. Why the "coon" specification, knowing that it's a common racial slur?

Can you explain the "old habits die hard" in a way that didn't imply racism?

That's a stretch.

Can you explain the "old habits die hard" in a way that isn't meant to be racist?

If it wasn't intended to be racist then "Hunting" would have been fine. Or even "Racoon Hunting," or just a picture of a racoon. Why the "coon" specification, knowing that it's a common racial slur?
