I can relate very much to Petty in this article.

Billy, your change of heart on the subject reminded me - in a good way - of this older Tom Petty article.

I get what you're saying that maybe not everyone who flies the confederate flag is a bad person...but, in 2020, it's getting harder and harder to believe that's the case.

Agreed. Most folks do better when they know better.

Not everyone who flies the confederate flag is a bigot or a bad person. I didn't fly one in my home but I would wear it on a T-shirt especially for a band or something. It took me a long time to come around on this issue but the truth is that flag flew over battles fought for the purpose of keeping people enslaved. It flew over lynchings and acts of terror in violence. The klan flies it as well as a lot of other hate groups. I came to the conclusion that it's a symbol of white supremacy even if everyone who flies it isn't a white supremacist. White folks may see it as a sign of family heritage or pride and I get that, but to someone who is black it has a very different meaning. The oppressive power it represents is real and the positive feelings connected to it for white folks who aren't particularly prejudice is mostly void of it's original meaning. It's time to move on from this symbol.

You know, we've had marriage equality longer now than traitors had the confederacy.

Maybe everyone should just fly Pride flags. That would make more sense form a history/heritage standpoint. And that flag represents folks who actually won something.

Oh sorry, I missed some posts. This is America! You can decorate your house as you like, although some neighborhoods have regulations for historical preservation and stuff, but if you you buy a house there you know that going in.

True story. Some good friends who were a biracial couple had a daughter who became engaged to a very nice guy. They were invited to the family home to meet the future in-laws. The way they tell the story, when they walked in the door, the family had this giant confederate flag above the fireplace.
My friend said he was disconcerted, but did not say anything to be polite.
Over time, it turned out the family was not racist, they just did not know!
You cannot blame folks for ignorance.
Now the kids have three kids of their own. The in-laws, took the flag down before the marriage and felt just horrible about having it displayed in the first place. They just did not know.

I now see further back some folks think it should be illegal. I don't agree and I don't think the confederate flag is in danger of being across the board banned. I think you should be able to fly whatever flag and burn whatever flag you want. I do think there should be strict zoning for flags though. Size of flag and flag pole. I also fully support people being criticized, judged, ostracized and spoken out about for flying the flags thwy choose to fly. 1A baby. Thems the breaks.

Mich,
Except we're not in Germany.

You should talk with Bestill, he understands what freedom of speech means.

I am.

As I said, it should have been banned post civil war. It's no different than flying a nazi flag in Germany.

Are people saying it should be illegal to fly the confederate flag?

Bestill,
Are you saying that regardless of the person's reasons it is their 1st Amendment right to fly any flag they wish on their own property.

Thinking further, I can certainly understand why folks in South Korea and throughout the Pacific get a little PTSD looking at it.

Bestill,
That may be true, but do you do you not agree that while they are on US soil it is their 1st Amendment right to fly the Empire of Japan WW2 flag.

I think it would probably be unlikely, but if a radical right wing Japanese American wanted to display the flag on their private property, I got no problem with it. I would probably drive by and think, "Hmmmm. Those people must be right wing radicals that support the atrocities committed during the war years." Sometimes it helps to know what folks believe.

I was completely unaware of the controversy around Japan's flag. Interesting!

The only Japanese folks that fly the War Flag are right wing radicals who claim it was a "sacred war". Same/Same.
