It is hard to believe that fall is just around the corner, and its never too early to start preparing for colder weather. Once August rolls around, we tend to be consumed by preparing for school to start, making plans for the holidays and getting back into fall schedules, which is why starting to prepare your home for fall early is a good idea. Here are a few essential jobs that need to happen in order for your home to be ready for the colder months.

Exterior preparations

Exterior house preparations are slightly more important than interior preparations because once the weather gets cold, certain preparations are impossible to complete. Start by power washing your home to give it a fresh new look, as well as prepare it for harsh weather. Of the Hearth recommends that you inspect your roof for missing, loose or damaged shingles that need to be fixed before they lead to larger problems. Clean out the gutters and downspouts to prevent buildup and flooding. Check out and remove tree branches that can cause problems by being too close to the home. Lastly, inspect the foundation of your home as well as make sure the plumbing features are winterized.

Interior cleaning and organization

Much more time is spent inside the home during the fall and winter, which is why it is important to get rid of clutter and give your home a scrub down. Clutter and mess takes up space and can make you and your family feel closed in. Make sure your home is comfortable by purchasing organization tools to keep closets and other areas organized and messes easy to clean up. Clean air vents to prevent dust and allergens from blowing around your home all winter. In order to make your life easier, make sure your storage room is organized and holiday décor and winter clothing is easy to get to.

Preventing problems

There are many fall preparations that are vital when it comes to your safety as well as the safety of your family members and guests. Have your furnace inspected so you know it will work properly when it comes time to use it. Purchase carbon monoxide detectors to put your mind at ease and protect your family. Check your home for cracks or gaps around doors and windows and seal them with caulk or weather stripping to keep warm air in and cold air out. Make sure you have a working fire extinguisher, first aid kit, 72 hour kit and other emergency essentials on hand. Finally, check your attic and other areas of your home for moisture leaks that can lead to bigger problems, and take care of them immediately. It is easier to take care of problems when you are prepared.
