“Capturing Light and Color in the Landscape”

Public Event

Saturday, Jul. 28, 2012

The Hiddenite Center is pleased to welcome renowned regional artist, Diane Pike for an exciting one day workshop in “Plein Air” painting. Plein Air, a French expression which means “in the open air,” is used to describe the act and art of painting outdoors on site. This unique workshop will provide a new perspective on capturing light and color on canvass.

The Hiddenite Center’s Plein Air workshop with Diane Pike will be held on Saturday, July 28th from 10:00am until 2:00pm at the Historic James Paul Lucas Mansion, which is located at 316 Hiddenite Church Road. Cost for the workshop, which includes a delightful lunch, is only $50 for the public and $45 for members of the Friends of the Hiddenite Center program.

Space for this unique workshop experience is limited, so interested intermediate to advanced painters are encouraged to make reservations early by calling (828) 632-6966. Each student is responsible for bringing their own materials including canvas or canvas board and either oil or acrylic paints, brushes, etc. The Hiddenite Center will provide easels for those who cannot provide their own.

During the morning session of the workshop, Pike will demonstrate technique and then students will have the opportunity to experience Plein Air painting on the grounds of the Lucas Mansion and on site at the Hiddenite Center’s cabin restoration project area.
Diane Pike holds a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Northern Colorado where she studied printmaking and graphic design. Diane’s first painting class was in March of 2002 when she studied with Chuck Ceraso learning to see and paint color with the influence of light, studies he based on the teachings of Henry Hensche from the Cape School of Art. Diane studied with Ceraso for four years with pastel as her medium.

When describing her work, Pike says, “My paintings are a result of my pursuit to understand and express how light creates color and how those different notes of color convey light.”
That brought her to a year long study with Kevin Weckbach in 2006 where she also began painting in oil. In addition, Diane has studied with Ken Valastro and Quang Ho at the Art Students League of Denver in Colorado.

“Understanding how sunlight affects the perception we have of color and translating the many keys of light and shadow to whatever subject I am drawn to is the challenge I face each time I put paint onto the canvas,” Pike went on to say. “Learning the art of color seeing will change your approach to painting.”
Diane lives in the Lake Norman area with her husband where she paints full time and teaches studio classes and a few workshops each year.

The Hiddenite Center is a non profit arts and cultural heritage organization in Alexander County, NC. The Hiddenite Center offers monthly gallery exhibits, a history museum, classes in art and pottery, and live performing arts events for the Western North Carolina region.
